This is a brand new, never used hand-knotted rug in a true room size, 9'10" x 14', woven in wool with silk highlights over a cotton foundation. The drawing is French in spirit, a Savonnerie style oval medallion floating in a deep navy field crowded with rose and peony bouquets, framed by a burgundy vine border. The silk is used where it counts, in the flower heads and leaf tips, so the bouquets lift off the navy ground as you walk around the piece. Photographed flat in our Freeport warehouse, it lies straight with no ripple, the selvedges are tight and the fringe is full and original. Design and Motifs

The center holds a burgundy cartouche filled with a tied bouquet of roses, poppies and small blue forget-me-nots, ringed by a band of gold arabesque scrollwork and then by a full wreath of ivory and pink flower clusters. Around that wreath the field is set with free standing bouquets and feathered acanthus sprays arranged in mirrored pairs, so the pattern reads as a formal garden rather than a repeating lattice. All 4 corners carry large gold acanthus scrolls that curl inward toward the medallion, a device lifted straight from 18th century French floor coverings. The border system runs 5 bands deep: a narrow navy outer stripe, a gold vine guard, a wide burgundy main border planted with flowering urns and leafy branches, a second gold guard with a zigzag ribbon, and a fine ivory line against the field. Outlines are lightly clipped along the motifs, which sharpens every leaf and petal and gives the surface a low relief you can feel with your hand.

A Deep Navy Field With Burgundy and Gold

The field is a dark, saturated navy that goes close to midnight in shadow and opens into a clear royal blue in direct light, which is exactly what you see when you compare the flat overhead photo with the low angle shots. Against it the palette is warm and deliberately soft: antique gold and buff for the vines, ivory and cream for the flower centers, sage and olive green for the foliage, and a dusty rose to salmon pink for the roses, with tiny accents of pale grey blue and red in the small blossoms. The pile is clipped medium low so the fine curved lines of the medallion and the vine border stay legible, and the wool is springy under foot rather than limp, a sign of good fleece and a firm beat-down.
