9'2" x 12'4" Indian Agra Rug | Coral Zigler Cloud Lattice Design | Brand New Wool
This is a brand new hand-knotted wool Agra in the Zigler manner, 9'2" x 12'4" of coral ground covered edge to edge in a beige and gold cloud lattice. There is no medallion and no open corner spandrel, which is deliberate: the whole field reads as one continuous textile, more like a length of woven silk brocade than a classic floor pattern. The borders do the heavy lifting instead, three deep bands of cartouches, cloud scrolls and a red Greek key stripe that frame the field without crowding it. The wool is tightly packed and the pile has been clipped low, so the drawing stays crisp and the surface takes light the way a good semi-antique does. It is an Oriental rug built for rooms that want warmth without a focal point in the center, and it ships with our certificate of authenticity confirming the weave, materials and origin.
Design and Motifs
The field repeats a single unit: 4 paired C scrolls meeting to form a soft quatrefoil, each one linking to the next so the lattice never breaks across the full 12'4" length. Seen close up in the detail photos, every scroll end curls into a tight volute outlined in a thin green line, which keeps the beige from flattening into a solid mass. The inner guard stripe carries a running S motif. Next comes a band of beige cartouches, each holding either a single upright bar or a small leafed sprig, alternating all the way around. The wide main border is the most sculptural part of the rug: tall fluted columns of striped brown, rust and sage rise toward pointed arches, with rosette cartouches set between them, a drawing that owes more to Central Asian and Mughal textile sources than to any floral spray. Outside that sits the red and gold Greek key meander, an unusual and very graphic finish for a rug of this type, and the outermost stripe is plain coral with ivory cotton fringe at both ends. Among 9x12 Oriental rugs this is the quiet-field, strong-border option.
A Coral Field With Gold, Sage and Brown
The ground is a true coral, a brick red warmed toward terracotta, and it is not flat. The wool was dyed in small lots, so the field moves between a deeper madder red in the center and a lighter salmon tone toward the edges, visible in the full views and especially in the macro shot. Against that, the lattice is a pale wheat beige that turns almost antique gold under direct light, with hairline sage green outlining each scroll. The border palette widens the range: honey gold in the cartouche band, cool sage and celadon in the fluted columns, chocolate brown in the fine striping, and bursts of rust orange in the small rosettes. The Greek key reads red on gold. The back view shows the same colors muted, which is a good sign that the dyes carry evenly through the knot rather than sitting only on the surface. Together it is a warm, lamplit room palette that sits easily with brown leather, walnut, brass and cream plaster, and the beige border gives the eye somewhere to rest so the coral never feels loud.
Woven in India in the Agra Tradition
Agra has been a weaving center since the Mughal court workshops, and the city's modern looms still draw on those pattern books, which is exactly where the arcaded border and brocade-style lattice on this rug come from. India is now where most of the world's best contemporary hand-knotted work is made, and we say that without hedging: the spinning, the dyeing and the clipping on this piece are all workshop grade. The weave here is a double-knot wool pile on a cotton foundation, hand-knotted row by row, with the selvedges overcast in coral and the ends finished in plain ivory fringe. Handle the rug and you feel a firm, even body rather than a floppy one, and the back is tight and regular with no slubs or skipped rows. At 9'2" x 12'4" it covers a standard living room with furniture set fully on the rug, or seats a 10 person dining table with chairs pulled back, and it belongs with the better modern and contemporary hand-knotted rugs rather than anything power-loomed.
