9' x 12'1" Indian Oriental Rug | Zigler All-Over Floral Design | Dense Wool, New

This is a new, never used hand-knotted wool rug in the classic Zigler drawing, woven in India on a cotton foundation and finished at 9' x 12'1". The pile is dense and tightly packed, with a low even clip that lets the fine outlines read cleanly, and the wool has the quiet sheen you can see in the rolled and folded shots. Nothing about it is rushed: the field carries a continuous vine lattice with no medallion, and the drawing stays symmetrical from end to end. It sits squarely in the most useful of all large formats, which is why 9x12 Oriental rugs remain the first size most buyers look for. Every rug we sell ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming that it is genuinely hand-knotted.

Please Note About the Photographs:

The flat overhead photograph was shot under strong studio light and reads deeper and more maroon than the rug actually is. The angled views and the close-up detail shots show the true tone, which is a warm rust with a brick cast. Please use those images as your color reference.

Design and Motifs

The field is a true all-over floral design, built from a repeating ogee lattice of ivory and camel vines that loop and cross their way across the whole 12'1" length. Inside each compartment sit large 8 petal rosettes, lotus palmettes, split leaves and tiny 4 petal blossoms, with cypress and sprig fillers packed into the gaps so there is almost no empty ground. Because there is no central medallion, furniture can be placed anywhere on the rug without cutting the drawing in half. The main border is the most distinctive part: a camel and rust band of stylized palm trees and flowering shrubs with small facing animals, deer and birds, tucked between them, alternating with large cone shaped boteh cartouches in sage and gold. Two narrow leaf and blossom guard bands frame it on either side, and the corners resolve cleanly rather than being cut off.

A Rust Field With Olive Green, Camel and Ivory

The ground color is a warm rust, somewhere between brick and terracotta, with the natural variation of hand-spun dyed wool giving it depth rather than a flat painted look. Over that run the vines in soft camel and ivory, the single brightest element in the rug, which keeps the lattice legible from across a room. The flower heads carry the rest of the palette: olive and sage green leaves, antique gold centers, blush pink and salmon petals, cream outlines and deep burgundy shading that reads almost black in the small details. The blue in this rug is restrained, showing up as muted teal and slate accents in the eyes of the rosettes and in a few border leaves, which is enough to cool the warm tones without competing with them. The camel border is a clear tonal step lighter than the field, so the whole piece has an aged, mellow look straight off the loom rather than anything loud.

Made in India: Zigler Drawing and Weave Quality

India is where most of the world's best contemporary hand-knotted work is now produced, and this piece is a good example of why. The Zigler style itself was a 19th century commercial design adapted for Western interiors, and Indian workshops have carried it forward with better wool, denser knotting and cleaner outlines than the originals ever had. On this rug the knot count is high enough to draw a curved vine without jagging, the selvages are tightly wrapped, and the back is even and square with no pull or bowing. If you are weighing the difference between this type of piece and a village or city weave from Persia, our guide on what separates a Persian from an Oriental rug explains it plainly. This one is new, has never been on a floor, and the pile still stands full height across the entire 9' width.

Ask about this rug

This piece is the only one of it, so the things worth knowing about it are particular to it. If you want to talk through the size, the colour in your own light, or the weave, speak to someone here first.
