8'10" x 12'1" Zigler Oriental Rug | Charcoal Black All-Over Floral | Natural Wool, Made in India

A dark ground with a warm palette is the hardest thing to get right in a large room size piece, and this new 8'10" x 12'1" Zigler does it with a charcoal black field carrying gold, rust and olive drawing that stays legible from across the room. It is a hand-knotted Oriental rug in natural wool on a cotton foundation, never used, with clean squared corners, straight sides and full pile all the way to the ends. Design and Motifs

There is no central medallion here. The field is a true all-over floral repeat built from large curling acanthus leaves, split palmettes and 8 petal rosettes joined by thin vines that swing left and right in mirrored pairs, so the pattern reads the same from either end. Small rust colored cloud bands and single leaf sprigs fill the gaps between the big forms, which is what keeps a dark field from looking empty. The wide beige main border carries a serrated palmette and leaf cluster that repeats about every 14 inches, framed by an olive guard stripe on the inside and a narrow rosette vine on the outside, with a dark charcoal outer edge and plain cotton fringe finishing both ends.

A Charcoal Black Field Lit by Gold and Rust

The field is charcoal black, deep enough to read as black in a lit room, with a warm brown and olive undertone that surfaces in raking light and in the close-up photographs. Against it the drawing runs through pale gold, honey, wheat and antique ivory in the large leaves and blossoms, with rust orange in the vines and cloud bands and olive green through the smaller foliage. Finer touches appear at arm's length: rose pink, soft lavender, pale sky blue and a muted teal inside the rosette centers, all of them low in saturation so nothing shouts. The border shifts the balance completely, a soft beige ground with an olive inner stripe that lifts the whole rug and keeps the dark center from feeling heavy. Beige and ivory walls, warm wood, brass and leather all sit naturally with this coloring.

Made in India: The Modern Home of Fine Hand-Knotting

India is where most of the world's best contemporary hand-knotted work is produced today, and this Zigler is a good example of why. The wool is natural and well spun, with the slight tonal variation across the black field that comes from hand-dyed yarn rather than machine uniformity. The back shows an even, tightly packed knot line with no bulges or drawn-in edges, the selvedges are firmly overcast, and the pile is cut at a medium height that lets the fine outlining stay sharp while giving the rug real durability underfoot. At 8'10" x 12'1" it fills the standard 9x12 rug footprint, the size that carries a full seating group with all four legs on the wool or an 8 seat dining table with chairs pulled back.
