9' x 12' Jaipur Oriental Rug | Agra-Style All-Over Floral Design | Dense Soft Wool, Brand New
This is a brand new, never used hand-knotted rug from Jaipur in northern India, woven in the classic Agra manner on a cotton foundation with a dense, soft wool pile. At 9' x 12' it covers a full seating group or a dining table with chairs pulled out, and the drawing was planned for exactly that scale: large palmettes and serrated leaves that still read clearly when you are standing over them. The pile has real body, the selvages are tight, and the ivory fringe is hand-tied and even on both ends. Among 9x12 Oriental rugs this is the traditional formal option, deep red with a navy border, and it ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming it is genuinely hand-knotted.
Design and Motifs
The field is an all-over floral composition rather than a single medallion, built from large fan-shaped palmettes, open lotus blossoms, 8 petal rosettes and long serrated acanthus leaves, all linked by a thin scrolling vine. The layout mirrors down the center line, so the pattern repeats in symmetry from side to side while continuing uninterrupted into the border, the hallmark of the 17th century Agra workshop style. Small navy rosettes and tiny stemmed buds fill the gaps between the big flower heads so the red ground never reads empty. The main border is drawn as a run of linked cartouches and red octagonal panels on navy, each one holding its own rosette, separated by stylized lotus heads. A narrow sage stripe with alternating gold and mauve flowerheads frames it on both sides, and the outer edge finishes in solid burgundy.
Color: Burgundy, Navy, Ivory and Soft Green
The ground is a deep burgundy red that shifts between wine and oxblood as the light moves across the pile, with gentle abrash giving the field the slightly breathing tone you only get from hand-dyed wool. Sitting on it, the palmettes are worked in warm gold and apricot with ivory outlines, while the leaves run through a muted sage and celadon green with touches of dusty pink and pale blue-grey. The border ground is the black-blue noted in the specs, dark enough to read almost black at a distance, which makes the gold scrollwork and the cream florals on it stand out sharply. The guard stripes are a soft olive green with clear orange and gold rosettes, and small accents of brick red and charcoal appear throughout the border panels. Overall the palette is traditional and warm, not bright: good with walnut and cherry furniture, cream or putty walls, and leather.
Origin and Weaving Quality: Jaipur, India
Jaipur and the surrounding workshops of Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh are where most of the world's best contemporary hand-knotted weaving is now done, and this piece shows why: even knotting across the full 12' length, straight borders, no waviness in the sides, and a clean, legible back. The weavers work from a cartoon on cotton warps, knot by knot, the same method used for any fine Oriental rug, and the wool here is a long-staple fleece spun for loft, which is what gives the pile its soft hand and quick spring back underfoot. Because it is new, you get the full pile height and the full service life ahead of you, with none of the thinning or restoration a decades-old piece carries. Honest origin, honest construction, and a traditional design executed with real care.
