9'4" x 13'4" Persian Kashan Rug | Navy Blue Zodiac All Over Floral | Signed by the Weaver
This is a signed Persian Kashan in a format that suits a real room rather than a showroom wall, measuring 9'4" x 13'4" with a dense 3/8" wool pile knotted on a cotton foundation. Instead of the familiar lobed medallion, the weaver filled the whole field with a mirrored floral lattice, which is the harder of the two Persian Kashan rug layouts to draw because every vine has to resolve against the border on all 4 sides. The weave is tight and even, the pile is full with no low spots, and the ivory cotton fringe is intact at both ends. A woven cartouche sits in the ivory border at one end, which is the mark of a workshop piece rather than a village copy. Among large Persian rugs this is an unusually complete example for the money, and every rug we ship carries a certificate of authenticity documenting origin, materials and construction.
Design and Motifs
The field is a true all over floral composition built from 3 repeating elements: crowned palmettes drawn in gold and ivory, open lotus rosettes with small red centers, and clusters of tulip and carnation heads carried on thin scrolling vines. Serrated leaves and curling cloud-band sickles weave between them, so the eye never settles on a single focal point and the pattern reads the same from either end of the room. Symmetry runs along both the long and short axis, with matching motifs answering each other across the center line, as the close-up photograph shows. The border system is a wide ivory main band of alternating palmettes and rosettes, framed by a narrow grey-lavender guard stripe on each side carrying a small repeating leaf and stem motif, then an outer navy band that picks the field color back up. The 4 corners are resolved cleanly, with the main border pattern turning rather than being cut off, and the signature cartouche interrupts the main border at one end as the only break in the repeat.
Color Palette
The ground is blue zodiac, a deep inky navy that sits just short of black in low light and opens into a clear midnight blue when daylight crosses the pile. Against it the drawing is carried almost entirely in cool ivory and cream, with a second register of pale sky blue in the smaller blossoms and leaf tips that keeps the field from going heavy. Warmth comes from soft gold and saffron yellow in the palmette crowns and vine outlines, apricot and light rust in the petal shading, and pinpoint touches of true red at the flower centers, which are the brightest notes in the rug and are used sparingly. Olive and celadon green appear in the leaves and stems. The border reverses the balance, putting ivory and a greyed lavender in the lead with navy reduced to outlines, so the rug frames itself and lifts at the edges. For buyers working around a dark palette, it belongs with the navy blue Persian rugs rather than the warm reds, and it reads as a cool, formal floor.
Kashan Origin and Weaving Quality
Kashan sits in central Persia, north of Isfahan, and its weaving goes back to the Safavid court workshops, which is why the town is associated with formal floral drawing rather than tribal geometry. Local wool is soft and lustrous, and it takes dye in the deep saturated tones that make a navy Kashan field look like it has depth instead of flatness. This rug shows the signs of real town work: fine, regular knotting visible on the reverse, straight sides, square corners, and a 3/8" pile clipped low enough to hold the fine detail of the vine work. The woven signature in the border is how a Kashan workshop stood behind its own product, and signed pieces are the ones that hold value in the resale market. If you want a reference point for how familiar this design is, when you watch Shark Tank there is a Persian Kashan on the floor. At 9'4" x 13'4" this one is the practical size for that look, and it ships free to all 50 states.
