9'5" x 12'9" Persian Kashan Rug | All Over Floral Navy Blue Field | 1980s, Excellent Condition

Most room size Kashans you meet are red with a lobed medallion. This 9'5" x 12'9" piece takes the other road: a midnight navy ground covered corner to corner in flowering vine, with no central medallion to anchor the eye. Woven in the 1980s on a cotton foundation with a full wool pile, it reads as one continuous garden rather than a single focal point, which is exactly why it settles so easily under furniture. The wool still carries its original sheen, the pile stands evenly across all 113 inches of width, and the sides and fringe are sound. Design and Motifs

The field is a true all over floral design, built from a lattice of thin scrolling vines that carry palmettes, serrated leaves, cypress buds and small 8 petal rosettes in every direction. Look closely at the center and you will find a single squared rosette in ivory and green, not a medallion but a quiet marker that the weaver kept the drawing symmetrical from both ends. The repeat is dense and deliberate, with larger sunburst palmettes spaced across the ground and finer blossoms filling the gaps, so the pattern never opens into empty space. Framing it are five bands: a wide navy main border of alternating palmettes and cusped floral cartouches, flanked by ivory and pale blue guard stripes drawn with a slim continuous vine, all separated by thin gold outlines that keep each band crisp. The corners resolve cleanly, a good test of a workshop cartoon, and the 4 corners of the main border match one another turn for turn.

A Navy Ground Lit by Gold, Ivory and Rust

The ground is a deep indigo navy that photographs almost black in the flat overhead shots and opens into a clear blue where light rakes across the pile. Against it the palette is warm and unusually varied for navy blue Persian rugs: saffron and marigold gold in the large palmettes, cream and soft beige in the leaves and vine tips, rust and terracotta in the flower hearts, and small pricks of deep red and olive green that give each blossom a center. A pale sky blue runs through the leaves and the inner guard band, cooling the gold so the rug never turns brassy. The main border keeps the same navy as the field, while the outer and inner guards shift to ivory and blush peach, which is what visually lifts the border away from the ground. Abrash is minimal, and the overall reading from across a room is dark blue and gold with ivory edges.

Kashan: The Weaving City of Central Persia

Kashan sits in central Persia north of Isfahan and has been weaving at a court standard since the Safavid era, when its looms supplied the palaces and its silk work traveled as diplomatic gifts. The town's reputation rests on two things: soft, lustrous local wool that takes dye deeply and holds a sheen for decades, and a disciplined workshop tradition where the weaver follows a drawn cartoon rather than improvising.
