9'6" x 12'10" Persian Tabriz Rug | Dark Pink Floral Medallion Field | Excellent Condition

This hand-knotted Tabriz measures 9'6" x 12'10", which puts it right in the 10x13 Persian rugs bracket that most formal living rooms and long dining rooms are actually shopping for. The field is a dark pink that reads as deep rose red under lamplight, worked corner to corner with fine floral drawing around a single indigo medallion, and framed by a wide dark indigo border. The pile is 3/8" wool on a cotton foundation, heavy enough to sit flat and take real traffic, fine enough to hold the small blossoms, buds and curling leaves without them blurring together. Condition is excellent: full even pile, straight sides, original ends and clean ivory fringe, as the back photograph with the ruler shows. Design and Motifs

The center holds a layered medallion: a soft blue core with an 8 petal rosette at its heart, ringed in ivory, then enclosed by a lobed indigo cartouche of palmettes and split leaves. Slender pendants run off the medallion at the top and bottom of the field, and ivory spandrels close in the 4 corners with their own blue arabesque vine. Around all of that the ground is not left quiet for a moment. Rosettes, palmettes, tulip forms, feathery saz leaves and thin curling vine tendrils cover the entire field in a balanced repeat that mirrors across both axes, the kind of drawn-from-a-cartoon precision that separates workshop weaving from village work. The wide main border sets ivory and rose flower heads with upright bouquets against dark indigo, and it is flanked on both sides by narrow guard stripes and a fine reciprocal outer stripe that keeps the whole composition tightly contained.

A Dark Pink Field Against Indigo and Ivory

The dominant color is the dark pink ground, a saturated rose red with a cool cast to it rather than the brick or tomato tone you see further south, and it carries a gentle abrash that makes the field breathe across 12'10" of length. Against it the drawing is picked out in ivory and cream, which is what gives the rug its brightness at a distance, and in a dark indigo so deep it reads nearly black in the border and in the shadowed parts of the medallion. Inside the florals there is a secondary palette that only shows up close: mid sky blue in the medallion core and in the border flower heads, olive and sage green in the leaves, warm camel and cinnamon brown in the palmette centers, plus small touches of soft rose and chocolate. The overall effect is a rich, dressy color scheme that works with mahogany and walnut furniture, cream walls and navy upholstery.

Woven in the Tabriz Tradition of Northwest Persia

Tabriz sits in the northwest of Persia and has been the country's most disciplined commercial weaving city for centuries, the place where a designer's cartoon, a master weaver and a room-size loom come together. Tabriz weavers work to the Raj system, counting knots per gereh across the width, and they use a hook-ended knife that lets them keep a curved line honest at speed, which is exactly why a floral medallion of this complexity holds its shape at both ends of the rug rather than drifting. The wool here has the dry, springy handle typical of the region's flocks, so the 3/8" pile compresses under furniture and comes back rather than matting down. On a cotton warp and weft the rug lies dead flat, and a piece of this weight and weave is built to be walked on for generations, not protected.
