9'6" x 15' Persian Kashan Rug | Red Floral Field with Navy Medallion | Perfect Condition
This is the classic city formula executed at generous room scale: a deep red field, a navy lobed medallion, ivory corner spandrels and a wide navy main border, all hand-knotted in wool on a cotton foundation. At 9'6" x 15' it covers a full seating group or a 10 seat dining table with the border still reading clearly at the edges, which is exactly why Persian Kashan rugs in this size are so hard to find in perfect condition. The pile is full and even from end to end, the fringes are original and the drawing is symmetrical on both axes. Every rug we ship carries a certificate of authenticity confirming it is a genuine hand-knotted Persian piece.
Design and Motifs
The center holds an 8 petal rosette set in a blue roundel, framed by an ivory cartouche and then by the navy lobed medallion itself, with a slim pendant finial reaching toward each end. Around it the red field is filled edge to edge with an all over floral system of palmettes, curled saz leaves, small rosettes and thin scrolling vines that connect every element without ever crowding it. The 4 corner spandrels repeat the same vocabulary against navy and ivory grounds, so the composition resolves neatly no matter where furniture lands on it. The border scheme runs to 5 bands: a broad navy main border of alternating palmettes and rosettes on a pink vine, flanked by blue floral guard stripes and finished with narrow ivory meander bands, a layered arrangement visible in the corner and border close-ups.
A Deep Red Field with Navy, Blue and Green Accents
The ground is a true madder red, deep and slightly cool rather than orange, and the wool takes light so that the field shifts between brick and wine as you walk the length of the rug. Against it the medallion and border read almost black navy until you get close, at which point they open into midnight blue with teal, sage green and moss green leaves worked through the vine. The secondary palette is where the piece earns its character: soft rose and salmon petals, warm gold and apricot outlines, small touches of terracotta, and clean ivory that carries the spandrels, the medallion frame and the outer guard bands. Blue appears in three distinct values, from the pale sky blue of the inner guard stripe to the mid blue of the rosette centers and the dark navy of the ground, which keeps the red from ever looking flat.
Kashan Weaving and Quality
Kashan sits in central Persia north of Isfahan and has been a weaving town since the Safavid court workshops, which is where this medallion and spandrel layout comes from. The local wool is soft and lustrous, and Kashan weavers spin it fine enough to hold a curved line, so the vines here bend properly instead of stepping. Look at the reverse in the fold photo and you can see tight, regular knot rows on a cotton warp and weft, with the design as legible from the back as from the front, the mark of a well managed loom rather than a rushed one. It is also the pattern most Americans already know by sight: when you watch Shark Tank there is a Persian Kashan on the floor. Among oversize Persian rugs, a 15 foot Kashan woven in the 2000's with untouched pile is a piece you buy once.
