At 9'6" x 16'2" this is a genuine long-room weave, the kind of piece that was drawn for a hall or a formal salon rather than scaled down from a smaller pattern. It is hand-knotted in wool on a cotton foundation, with no central medallion: the burgundy field carries a continuous floral repeat from end to end, which is what lets a rug of this length read as one calm surface instead of a stretched design. The pile is even across the whole field, the ends and sides are sound, and the drawing stays crisp right into the corners. Design and Motifs

The field is an all-over floral design built on a thin navy vine that loops the length of the rug and ties every element together. Sitting on that vine are broad Shah Abbas palmettes, 8 and 10 petal rosettes, curled serrated leaves, small daisy sprays and elongated boteh forms that lean in alternating directions row after row. The repeat mirrors across both the long and short axis, so the pattern resolves cleanly at all 4 corners rather than being cut off. Three borders frame it: a wide indigo main band of palmette and boteh figures linked by scrolling stems, flanked by ivory guard stripes carrying a running vine, and finished with narrow reciprocal minor bands. Look at the close-up and you can see individual flower heads shaded in two or three tones, which is a drawing habit of city workshop weaving rather than village work.

A Burgundy Field Read Against Indigo and Green

The ground is burgundy with a raspberry cast, a wine red that warms considerably under lamp light and cools toward rose in daylight, with the gentle tonal drift across the width that hand-dyed wool always gives. Against it the outlines and the vine are a dark navy blue, nearly indigo, and the main border goes darker still, close to midnight, so the field appears to float inside it. The accent palette is where the rug earns its interest: sage and olive green in the leaves, a soft teal in the palmette centers, ivory and cream in the rosettes and guard stripes, rose pink, apricot and a touch of rust in the flower heads, plus deep brown in the smaller figures. Ivory carries the eye across the field in small measured dots, which keeps a 16 foot length from going heavy. Practically speaking this is a forgiving color scheme, deep enough to live with dark wood, rich enough to anchor cream or grey upholstery.

Mashad: The Weaving City of Khorasan

Mashad sits in Khorasan, in the northeast corner of Persia, and it has long been the region's workshop center, famous for exactly this format: large to oversize floor pieces woven on tall looms by teams working from a drawn cartoon. Khorasan wool is soft and slightly glossy, which is why a Mashad takes the deep madder and cochineal reds so well and why the pile keeps a low sheen as it ages. The weave here is firm and regular, the knotting fine enough to hold small flower heads and shaded petals without losing the curve of the vine, and the back shows straight, even rows over the full 16 foot run, a real test of loom discipline at this length.
