9'7" x 14'6" Oriental Rug | Burgundy All Over Floral, Black Border | Brand New Hand-Knotted Wool, Made in India

This is a brand new, never used hand-knotted Oriental rug woven in India in the classical floral tradition, measuring 9'7" x 14'6" and covering roughly 139 square feet of floor. The wool pile is heavy and tightly packed, the handle is substantial, and the ivory cotton fringe is still crisp and untrimmed, as the corner and back photographs show. Pieces at this scale belong with the oversize Oriental rugs that run wall to wall under a full seating group or a 10 seat dining table. Every rug we sell ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming it is genuinely hand-knotted, with its size, materials and origin documented.

Please Note About the Photographs:

A few of the floor shots show lighter sweeps and bright streaks across the burgundy field. That is the natural luster of the wool catching the studio lights as the nap lies in different directions, not wear, fading or damage. Walk around the rug and the field reads evenly deep burgundy. Every rug is professionally steamed and pressed before it leaves our warehouse.

Design and Motifs

There is no central medallion here. The field carries a true all over floral design, a repeating lattice of split palmettes, broad serrated acanthus leaves and thin curling vines that climb the full 14'6" length and mirror across the width. Within that framework the weaver placed layered blossoms: 8 petal rosettes with dark centers, rose colored shield palmettes filled with tiny stepped motifs, small gold starbursts, and tight clusters of carnations and tulips springing from the vine joints. Three bands enclose it all. A narrow camel inner guard with a running floral meander, then a wide black main border carrying large palmettes and rosettes alternating with leafy arabesques, then a camel outer guard stripe that repeats the small meander. The corners resolve cleanly, with the border drawing turning the angle without breaking its rhythm, which is the mark of a properly drafted cartoon rather than an improvised one.

The Burgundy and Black Palette

The ground is a deep burgundy, closer to claret and oxblood than to bright red, and it darkens almost to plum where the pile leans away from the light. Against it the drawing is worked in warm camel and soft tan, which do most of the heavy outlining, with dusty rose and salmon in the larger palmettes, clear gold and ochre in the small star rosettes, and ivory highlights on the leaf tips. Cool notes keep the whole thing from going too warm: slate blue and teal appear in the flower centers and leaf veins, and small touches of olive green and bright cherry red punctuate the vines. The main border flips the balance to a dense black ground, so the camel and rose florals on it read almost like embroidery, and the black acts as a frame that pulls the burgundy field forward. In a room with cool walls and blue or teal upholstery, as the setting photograph shows, the contrast is striking.

Made in India: Weaving and Quality

India is where most of the world's best contemporary hand-knotted work is now made, and this rug shows why. It is knotted on a cotton foundation with a 100% wool pile, hand-tied knot by knot on an upright loom, with the fine detail in the rosettes and the clean curve of the vines only possible at a respectable knot count. The wool is dense and springy underfoot, sheared to an even medium pile that holds the drawing sharply, and the selvedges are tightly overcast with the fringe hand-tied at both ends. At 9'7" x 14'6" a rug like this takes a team of weavers many months to complete, and because it has never been on a floor the pile stands full height, the colors are at full strength, and the first owner gets the entire life of the rug.
