9'8" x 12'10" Persian Kashan Rug | Signed Ivory Medallion Field | Excellent Condition

This 9'8" x 12'10" rug is a signed workshop piece in the classic tradition of Persian Kashan rugs, woven on a cotton foundation with a 3/8" wool pile and finished with a woven cartouche in the upper border. Instead of the familiar red ground, the weaver worked the whole composition on ivory, which lets the drawing read clearly from across a room and makes this one of the easier 10x13 Persian rugs to place in a light interior. The pile is even, the fringes and selvedges are intact, and the condition is excellent with no repairs visible in any of the photographs. Design and Motifs

The field is organized around a lobed central medallion with a small stepped inner panel holding an 8 petal rosette, finished top and bottom with slender pendants that taper into the field. Around the medallion runs a dense screen of curling arabesque vine, split palmettes, serrated saz leaves and small rosettes, repeated in the 4 corner spandrels so the layout balances from every side. The main border carries an alternating sequence of palmettes and lanceolate cartouches, framed by a run of narrow guard stripes with a meandering vine and tiny blossoms. The signature cartouche, visible in the close-up, sits centered in the upper border with navy script outlined in brown on an ivory ground, the mark of a named workshop rather than an anonymous village loom.

Ivory, Beige and Navy Blue Color Palette

The ground is a clean ivory that shifts toward cream where the light catches the wool, and the medallion and spandrels are drawn a half tone warmer in brown beige so they separate from the field without breaking it. Navy blue does the outlining work, tracing every vine, palmette and cartouche so the pattern stays crisp at a distance, and it deepens into the guard stripes to frame the whole composition. Between those three main tones the weaver dropped in secondary accents of soft sky blue, olive green, warm camel and small points of clear red at the flower centers, tiny in scale but enough to keep the neutral palette alive. On the floor this reads as an ivory rug with a blue and taupe drawing, easy against oak, limestone, walnut furniture and both warm and cool wall colors.

Kashan Weaving and Workshop Quality

Kashan sits in central Persia north of Isfahan and has been a weaving center since the Safavid court workshops, known for soft lustrous wool and a formal drawing style that depends on a tight, regular knot to hold its curved lines. The back of this rug, shown against a ruler, is uniform and finely nodded, which is what allows the vine scroll to curve smoothly rather than stepping. Kashan is also the design most people have seen without knowing its name, since when you watch Shark Tank there is a Persian Kashan on the floor. In a rug this wide the discipline matters: the medallion is centered, the borders turn the corners cleanly, and the all-over field repeats without drift over nearly 13 feet of length.
