9'8" x 12'10" Persian Tabriz Rug | Red Pink Geometric Panel Field | Navy Medallion, Ivory Spandrels
A full room-size Tabriz with real presence: 9'8" x 12'10" of hand-knotted wool pile over a cotton foundation, drawn in the panelled medallion style that Tabriz workshops have refined for generations. The field reads as a single enormous octagon of crimson, filled with hexagonal cartouches, and the whole thing is framed by ivory corners and a deep navy border, so the rug sits comfortably in the standard 10x13 Persian rugs footprint while reading far more formal than most pieces that size. The pile is even from end to end at 3/8", the selvages are straight, and the ivory cotton fringe is clean and full. Every rug we ship leaves Freeport with a certificate of authenticity recording origin, materials and size.
Design and Motifs
The composition is built from straight lines rather than curves. A large navy lobed medallion sits dead centre, holding an 8 petal ivory rosette around a small star, with pale sky blue panel flowers set into each lobe and dark green leaf scrolls breaking the outline. Above and below it run slender navy pendants, and left and right sit two shield shaped cartouches carrying a striped boteh. Radiating out from the medallion, the red field is organised into roughly 20 hexagonal panels outlined in fine navy dotted bands, each one filled with a single rosette, a star flower or a boteh, so the eye reads order first and detail second. The 4 corners are cut away as broad ivory spandrels, each drawn with a leaning cypress and willow spray, flowering stems and a small dark interlaced fret motif. Framing all of it is a navy main border of alternating palmettes and rose clusters on a scrolling vine, flanked by narrow floral guard stripes and a thin ivory outer line, visible clearly in the corner photograph.
Colors
The field is a cool crimson with a distinct pink cast, closer to raspberry than brick, and it stays consistent across the whole 12'10" length in the floor photographs. Against it, the medallion and the main border go almost black navy, which is what gives the rug its graphic punch, while the 4 spandrels lift to a warm cream ivory that reads buttery under lamplight. The small motifs carry the rest of the palette: sage and emerald green in the leaf scrolls and vines, pale sky blue and slate blue in the panel flowers, soft salmon and rose pink in the border rosettes, camel gold in the guard stripes and the cypress trunks, with touches of aubergine and ivory outlining. It is a saturated, traditional colourway, and it anchors a room of cream walls and dark wood easily, which is the usual reason buyers search for red Persian rugs at this scale.
Tabriz Origin and Weaving Quality
Tabriz sits in Azerbaijan province in the northwest corner of Persia and has been the commercial and technical centre of Persian weaving since the Safavid period. Tabriz weavers work on vertical looms with a hooked knife, count fineness in Raj (knots per gereh across the width), and are known for holding a cartoon exactly, which is why the dotted panel outlines here stay true and the medallion is perfectly symmetrical on both axes. The back of this piece shows a tight, regular knot with no slack rows, worked in good lustrous highland wool on a cotton warp and weft, the combination that lets a Tabriz keep its shape flat on the floor for decades under furniture. The back photograph with the 12 inch ruler lets you judge the knot count and the thin, dense handle for yourself before you buy.
