Design and Motifs

The center holds a small lobed medallion built around an 8 petal rosette in gold and rust, with a navy heart and pale blue cartouche lobes reaching out at both ends. Rather than dominating the field, the medallion sits inside a continuous all-over lattice of curved vine, split palmettes, lotus heads and small daisy rosettes that runs corner to corner without a break. Four spandrels in peach anchor the corners of the field and repeat the medallion drawing in miniature. The main border carries alternating palmettes and round floral cartouches on a peach ground, framed by ivory guard stripes with a fine running vine and a yellow zigzag line. The drawing is curvilinear throughout, the classic Kashan discipline where every stem returns cleanly to its source.

A Soft Ivory, Peach and Blue Palette

The field is a warm ivory, closer to cream than white, with the natural luster of good Kashan wool catching light differently as you walk around it. Against that ground the weaver worked two blues: a deep navy for outlines, leaf tips and the fine tracery of the vines, and a soft powder blue for palmette interiors, medallion lobes and the flowers in the guard stripes. The main border and spandrels shift to a muted peach, a salmon tone that reads pink in daylight and apricot under lamps. Accents of rust orange, marigold gold, sage and moss green, and occasional pinpricks of rose pink give the flowers their detail. There is no strong red anywhere, which makes this a genuinely light Kashan and an easy match for cream, taupe, walnut and grey interiors.

Kashan, the Weaving Town Behind It

Kashan sits in central Persia, north of Isfahan, and its looms trace back to the Safavid court workshops that set the standard for curvilinear floral weaving.
