9'9" x 12'10" Persian Tabriz Rug | Herati Mahi All-Over Design | Ivory Diamond Medallion | Excellent Condition

This is a full room size Tabriz in the classic Herati idiom: a dense diamond lattice running corner to corner, a small ivory lozenge holding the center, and 4 heavy spandrels pulling the eye back to the middle. At 9'9" x 12'10" it sits squarely in the most useful proportion for American rooms, which is why 10x13 Persian Tabriz rugs move faster than almost any other format we import. The pile is wool on a cotton foundation, the handle is firm and flat, and the back reads clean and even across the whole field, as the ruler shot shows. Every rug we sell ships with a certificate of authenticity.

Please Note About the Photographs:

The first photograph was taken under bright catalogue lighting and reads warmer and redder than the rug does in person. The warehouse floor photographs are the truer record: the field is a deep aubergine navy, with the brick red reserved for the main border and the corner spandrels.

Design and Motifs

The field is a true Herati, also called mahi or fish pattern: a repeating diamond trellis, a rosette set inside each diamond, and 4 curved lanceolate leaves swimming around it, which is where the fish name comes from. Here the repeat is drawn small and tight, so the lattice reads almost like textile damask across 12'10" of length. The ivory diamond medallion is tiny by Tabriz standards, framed in teal and red outline, filled with its own miniature grid of 8 petal rosettes. The main border carries a boteh and rosette procession on brick red, flanked by ivory guard stripes and a saw tooth zigzag inner line. This kind of balanced, edge to edge repeat is exactly what collectors look for in all over pattern Persian rugs.

Colour: Aubergine Ground, Brick Red Frame

The ground is a dark aubergine that shifts between plum and inky navy depending on where you stand, and the lattice itself is picked out in madder red so the whole field glows warm rather than cold. Inside the diamonds the weaver alternated gold, cream, coral, soft grey blue and a distinct teal green, which keeps the repeat from going flat. The main border is a clear brick red, the guard stripes are ivory and apricot, and the outermost edge is a near black plum that frames the piece hard. Ivory fringe at both ends. If this palette is what you are furnishing around, it belongs with our red and burgundy Persian rugs.

Tabriz Origin and Weaving Quality

Tabriz sits in northwestern Persia and has been the commercial and technical capital of Persian weaving for centuries, the city that standardised the Raj system by which fineness is still measured. Tabriz weavers work on a vertical loom with a hook, which is why their horizontal lines stay straight over long runs, and it is that discipline you can see in this rug: the trellis holds its angle for the full 12'10" without wandering, and the border corners resolve cleanly on all 4 sides rather than being cut short. The wool is the dense, slightly dry highland fleece typical of the region, cropped to a low even pile that takes traffic well and keeps the small Herati drawing legible.

Ask about this rug

This piece is the only one of it, so the things worth knowing about it are particular to it. If you want to talk through the size, the colour in your own light, or the weave, speak to someone here first.
