9'9" x 13' Signed Persian Rug | Burgundy Floral Medallion | Hand-Knotted Wool
The weaver signed this one. Look along the ivory band at one end of the border and the script is there, knotted in crimson wool, the mark of a workshop piece rather than anonymous village work. The rug measures 9'9" x 13', dates to the 2000's, and carries a single lobed rosette medallion on a deep burgundy ground with the entire field drawn in flowing vine work. The wool pile is thick, even and completely intact from end to end, the cotton foundation is straight, and the sides and fringes are sound. Every rug we sell ships with a certificate of authenticity.
Design and Motifs
The center holds a large navy medallion built in rings: a small rosette core set in a taupe roundel, then orange and sky blue palmettes, then a crown of ivory leaf tips with pink and crimson blossoms tucked between them. Around it the field runs as a true all over floral design, with curling boteh paisley sprays, feathered leaves, star flowers and thin vines that never repeat in a way the eye can catch. The 4 corners are filled with dark charcoal brown spandrels, each anchored by an ivory roundel, and the drawing turns a clean curve where the spandrel meets the field. Three bands make up the border: a narrow navy inner guard, a wide sky blue main border of palmettes and rosettes, and an ivory outer band with its own small flower chain. It is the classic Persian medallion and corner formula, drawn with a curved line rather than a geometric one.
Color
The field is a true burgundy, closer to wine than to tomato red, and it reads deeper under lamplight than it does in daylight. Against it the medallion sits in dark indigo navy, and the main border lifts the whole rug with a clear mid sky blue that is unusual to see held so evenly across a border that wide. Ivory does the structural work, outlining leaves, filling the guard band and giving the eye places to rest, while chocolate brown and charcoal frame the spandrels. Scattered through the florals are small hits of saffron yellow, burnt orange, camel, soft pink and pale celadon green, each one only a few knots wide, which is what keeps a red and blue rug from looking flat. Buyers comparing it against other burgundy Persian rugs will notice the blue border rather than the field, and that is the reason to own this one.
Origin and Weaving Quality
Made in Persia on a cotton warp and weft with a hand-spun wool pile, knot by knot, in the city workshop tradition where a designer supplies the cartoon and the weavers follow it line by line. That is what the signature cartouche tells you: someone took responsibility for the drawing. You can see the discipline in the curved outlines of the medallion lobes and in the way the vine scrolls stay symmetrical across almost 13 feet of length. The pile is full enough to show a crisp edge on every outline, and the handle is heavy and supple rather than stiff. Among 10x13 Persian rugs, a signed example in this condition is the harder thing to find, and at 9'9" x 13' it covers a full seating group or a long dining table without crowding the walls.
