9' x 12'2" Peshawar Chobi Rug | Antique Khotan Pomegranate Design | Pastel Teal Green & Gold

This is a new hand-knotted weaving of an old idea: a 19th century Khotan pomegranate pattern, redrawn by Peshawar weavers in hand-spun wool and natural dyes and then given a soft antique wash. The pale teal green field carries a loose lattice of pomegranates and rosettes in gold and apricot, and a broad camel border of interlocking fretwork frames it on all 4 sides. At 9' x 12'2" it lands squarely in the 9 x 12 rug size that anchors a full seating group or a 8 seat dining table, and as an Oriental rug it reads far quieter than most traditional pieces of this scale. It has never been used, it is in perfect condition, and it ships with a certificate of authenticity.

Design and Motifs

The field is an all-over composition rather than a medallion layout, so the eye travels instead of settling. Plump pomegranates, some drawn solid and some cross-hatched into a pineapple-like lattice, sit on thin connecting vines with small leaf sprays and tiny 4 petal blossoms between them. Larger rosettes with curling hooked arms repeat down the center line, and stylized vase and censer forms stand at the top and bottom of the field, a direct quote from antique Khotan and Samarkand weaving. The border does the structural work: a wide camel ground carrying a running Greek key fret in soft teal and coral, flanked by narrow guard stripes of brick red dashes, with small pomegranate rosettes tucked into the border ground itself. The corners are resolved cleanly, the fret turning without a break, which is a good sign of a careful cartoon and a disciplined weaver.

A Pastel Teal Green and Soft Gold Palette

The field is a muted teal green with a grey cast, closer to sage and sea glass than to any saturated emerald, and it shifts gently across the width the way hand-spun wool and vegetable dye always do. Against it the drawing is worked in warm gold, camel and apricot, with coral and a faded brick red used sparingly for outlines, the border dashes and the small pomegranate crowns. The outer border is a soft honey gold that lifts the whole piece, and the fringe and selvage read ivory. Nothing here is loud, which is why this palette suits rooms built on oatmeal, walnut, brass and stone. If you are shopping the wider range of green area rugs, note how unusually soft this green is in person; the close-up photographs of the pile are the truest record of the color.

Woven in Peshawar: Chobi Weaving and Quality

Peshawar, in northwest Pakistan, is the center of the Chobi tradition, where the wool is hand-spun rather than machine-spun and the dyes are drawn from plant and mineral sources, giving the slight tonal movement you see across this field. The pile is dense and evenly clipped at a medium height, the knots on the back are clear and regular across a cotton foundation, and the selvages are tightly overcast, all of which point to workshop-grade rather than village-grade work. A rug of this construction is built to be walked on for decades and it will bloom rather than wear thin, because hand-spun wool takes light differently on every fiber. This one is new, unused and perfect, waiting for its first floor.
