9'3" x 11'8" Zigler Chobi Peshawar Rug | Antique Khotan Panel Design | Faded Green & Gold, New
This 9'3" x 11'8" Zigler Chobi was hand-knotted in Peshawar, in northern Pakistan, and finished to read like a piece that has already lived a long life. The wool is hand-spun and dyed with natural plant dyes, then washed down so the greens settle into a soft, faded sage and the golds go warm and dusty. It is a brand new rug in perfect condition, never used, with a low even pile, a cotton foundation and hand-knotted ivory fringe at both ends. As an Oriental rug in one of the most usable proportions on the market, it sits squarely in the 9x12 rug range that anchors most living rooms and open plans. It ships with a certificate of authenticity.
Please Note About the Photographs:
The full overhead shot was taken under cooler studio light and reads greyer and darker than the rug actually is. The close-up photos of the field, border and pile show the true tone: a warm camel gold with a pale, faded green. The uneven patches of tone across the field are abrash, the natural color movement that comes from small batch plant dyes and hand-spun wool, not wear, fading or damage.
Design and Motifs
The field is laid out as a panel grid, a design borrowed from the old Khotan and Samarkand weavings of East Turkestan. Rounded compartments run 5 across and 8 down, each one outlined in soft green and filled with a large 8 petal rosette drawn in gold. Small gold discs sit at every point where 4 compartments meet, so the eye reads a lattice of circles rather than a single central medallion. The main border is the real signature of the drawing: a procession of tall pomegranate or tree forms with heart-shaped tops and curling ikat-style tendrils, alternating with small starred fillers on a narrow inner stripe. Narrow guard bands in plain green frame the whole thing without competing. Because the pattern repeats evenly edge to edge, furniture can sit anywhere on it without cutting off a focal point.
Faded Green and Gold Color
The two colors carry the whole rug. The compartment ground is a faded green that sits between sage and celadon, cool but chalky rather than bright, and it shifts a shade lighter or heavier from row to row as the dye lots change. Against it, the rosettes, the border ground and the wide outer field are a warm camel gold, closer to honey where the light hits the pile and closer to straw in the close-up photos. Ivory glints appear in the centers of some rosettes and along the fringe, and there are faint apricot and pale rust flickers in the wool visible in the pile detail. There is no black, no navy and no strong red anywhere, which is why this piece reads calm and sun-bleached rather than traditional. It works over wide plank oak, pale limestone and warm white walls, and it will sit quietly next to linen, aged leather and brass.
Peshawar Weaving and the Zigler Chobi Tradition
Peshawar is where the Chobi tradition has been refined over the past few decades, and it is now one of the strongest sources of hand-knotted work anywhere. Chobi means wood, a reference to the plant dyes drawn from walnut husk, pomegranate rind, indigo and madder. The Zigler name comes from the 19th century workshop practice of reworking classical drawings at a scale and palette suited to large Western rooms, and that is exactly what this rug does with the Khotan grid. The weave here is even and honest: a firm cotton warp and weft, a low clipped pile that keeps the drawing crisp, and hand-spun wool that has a slight irregularity in the yarn, which is what gives the surface its subtle horizontal movement. The folded corner photo shows a clean, tight back with the design fully legible from the reverse, and the selvedges are hand-wrapped and straight along both long sides.
