9' x 12' Modern Gabbeh Rug | Beige Minimalist Diamond Motifs | Hand-Knotted Wool, Made in India
This is the quiet end of the hand-knotted world: a brand new 9' x 12' modern Gabbeh in undyed-looking beige wool, knotted entirely by hand on a cotton foundation and left almost bare across the middle. There is no border, no medallion and no filler, only a wide open field of soft wool with two slim columns of tiny diamonds and squares tracing the long sides and a single row of the same motifs closing each end. At 108" x 144" it covers a full seating group or a 10 seat table, and because nothing competes for attention the room reads larger rather than busier. As with every rug we import, it ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming that it is a genuine hand-knotted piece and not a machine-made or tufted imitation.
Please Note About the Photographs:
The faint lines and soft shading you can see running through the field in several photos are fold marks and shadows from flat pallet storage, nothing more. They are not wear, not fading and not damage. On a pale open field like this they simply catch the warehouse lighting. They relax out once the rug is laid flat, and every rug we ship is professionally steamed and pressed before it leaves us.
Design and Motifs
The drawing follows the Gabbeh idea in its purest form: a tribal weaving language stripped back to an open field and a handful of small marks. Down each long side runs a single file of motifs that alternates between a plain outlined diamond and a small square with a dot at its center, spaced roughly a hand's width apart. Across one end, a full row of the same two shapes marches from selvedge to selvedge, which gives the rug a clear head and foot without ever forming a border. Everything else is left open. That restraint is deliberate and it is what makes this weave work under furniture, where a busy all over pattern would be lost anyway. The motifs are drawn freehand rather than from a cartoon, so no two diamonds are identical in size or outline, and that small irregularity is the fastest way to tell a hand-knotted Oriental rug from a printed or power-loomed copy.
A Beige Field With Real Depth
Beige is the whole point here, and this is a warm beige rather than a grey one. The field sits somewhere between oatmeal and light sand, lifting toward pale ivory where the light hits the pile straight on and dropping to a soft biscuit tone where the wool lies away from you. Because the yarn is spun in small lots, faint horizontal bands of tone cross the field, a natural abrash that keeps a large solid ground from looking flat or printed. The accent motifs are picked out in two darker values, a cool charcoal brown on the plain diamonds and a warmer tobacco brown on the outlined squares, and both are quiet enough to read as texture from standing height. The selvedges are finished in a darker neutral that frames the pale field cleanly. Against white oak, limewashed walls, linen upholstery or black metal, this palette does the job most neutral rugs promise and few deliver: it warms a room without adding a color you then have to decorate around.
Woven in India by Hand
India is where most of the world's good contemporary hand-knotted work is now made, and we say that with confidence after decades of buying there. This piece is knotted on a cotton warp with a full wool pile, and the back photograph shows the weave clearly: even, regular rows with no glue, no backing and no shortcuts, which is exactly what you want to see before you spend money on a room size rug. The pile is left on the longer side, giving the surface a soft, slightly shaggy hand that suits the Gabbeh style and makes the rug genuinely comfortable underfoot. Good wool is the real luxury in a plain rug, because with no pattern to hide behind, the fiber is all you are looking at. If you are shopping the standard living and dining footprint, you can compare this against our other 9 x 12 rugs and the wider modern and contemporary hand-knotted rugs we carry.
