9' x 13'7" Persian Kashan Rug | Deep Red Floral Medallion | Fine Natural Wool, 2000s

This is a textbook city weave from central Persia at a size that actually fits a real room: 9' x 13'7" of hand-knotted fine natural wool on a cotton foundation, woven in the 2000s and still in perfect condition with full, even pile from end to end. The drawing is the classic Persian Kashan formula, a navy lobed medallion floating on a deep red field of flowering vines, framed by ivory spandrels and a wide navy border. Hold it under a lamp and the wool reads slightly glossy, the kind of lustre you only get from well washed, properly spun pile. Every rug we ship leaves Freeport with a certificate of authenticity recording origin, materials and measurements.

Design and Motifs

The center is a stepped, lobed medallion in navy with an ivory inner cartouche and a small sky blue rosette at its heart, surrounded by 4 radiating palmettes and a crown of tiny blossoms. From there the field runs as a continuous system of curved vines, split leaves, lotus palmettes and multi petal rosettes, drawn so each half mirrors the other across both axes. The field itself is shaped as a large shield outline in ivory and gold, with 4 corner spandrels filled with the same vinework on ivory. The border scheme is layered: a wide navy main band of alternating rosettes and leafy arabesques, flanked by light blue guard stripes carrying small paired blossoms and a fine reciprocal edge. Corners resolve cleanly, which is the mark of a cartoon followed properly rather than improvised at the end of the weave.

Color Palette

The field is a deep tomato red with a touch of blue in it, saturated rather than bright, and it holds the whole rug together. Against it the medallion and main border read as a dark inky navy, close to midnight, while the guard stripes shift to a clear mid blue that lifts the edges and keeps the border from going heavy. Ivory does the structural work, outlining the field, filling the spandrels and the medallion core, and tracing the vines so the pattern stays legible from across the room. Within the flowers you find olive and sage green leaves, saffron gold stems and highlights, soft pink petals, and small notes of brown and teal in the rosette centers. The close-up photographs show those accent tones honestly; from standing height the rug reads as a warm red and navy piece with cream detail, one of the most forgiving combinations in red and burgundy Persian rugs.

Kashan Origin and Weaving Quality

Kashan sits in central Persia north of Isfahan and has been a weaving city since the Safavid court workshops, which is why its vocabulary is so settled: red field, navy lobed medallion, ivory spandrels, nothing tribal or improvised. The local wool is soft and lustrous, and Kashan weavers work it at a knot count fine enough to carry curved vine drawing without the lines going jagged, as you can see where the arabesques turn through the border corners in these photos. It is also the most familiar Persian design in America by far, the one you have already seen without naming it: when you watch Shark Tank there is a Persian Kashan on the floor. This example is a dense, even weave with a flat, square handle and tight selvedges, built for the traffic a 9' x 13'7" floor actually takes.
