10'1" x 14'1" Persian Kashan Rug | Signed Classic Medallion | Dense Floral Field, Excellent Condition
This is the classic formula that made the city famous, woven at full room scale and signed by the weaver in a cartouche at the top of the field. The pile is fine wool at 3/8", the foundation is cotton, and the handle is firm and even from selvage to selvage, with no wear, no repairs and no fading anywhere across the 10'1" x 14'1" surface. Condition is excellent. If you have been shopping 10x14 Persian rugs and keep coming back to the traditional red and navy look, this is that rug done properly, and our Persian Kashan rug guide explains what separates workshop weaving from the commercial grade. Every rug we ship leaves Freeport with a certificate of authenticity stating origin, materials and measurements.
Design and Motifs
A lobed navy medallion sits dead center, stepped at its edges and built in layers: an ivory inner cartouche holding a small sky blue rosette with a 4 petal flower at its heart, then a navy collar packed with palmettes and curling vine, then a thin ivory outline that lifts the whole shape off the field. Pendants rise and fall from the medallion on the long axis, each one a small version of the same drawing. The field around it is not open ground but a dense all-over lattice of Shah Abbas palmettes, serrated leaves, carnations and tiny 8 petal rosettes on thin stems, drawn in curved line and mirrored precisely top to bottom and left to right. Ivory spandrels fill all 4 corners with the same vocabulary on a pale ground, and the border system runs 5 deep: a wide navy main band of alternating rosettes and palmettes linked by a continuous vine, framed by sky blue and ivory guard stripes and finished with a slim reciprocal outer edge. The signature cartouche, visible in the detail photograph, is woven in navy script on a soft green and ivory ground.
The Color: Deep Madder Red, Navy, Sky Blue, Green and Ivory
The field is a deep madder red with a slight brick warmth to it, the shade that sits comfortably with mahogany, walnut and brass rather than fighting them, and the lustrous local wool gives it a sheen that shifts as you walk past. Against that red the border reads almost black navy, and that contrast is what gives the rug its weight across a large floor. Inside both field and border the palette opens right up: sky blue in the guard stripes, medallion heart and scattered blossoms, a cool sage and olive green in the leaves and the signature panel, soft rose and salmon pink in the flower heads, a mustard gold in the palmettes, and clean ivory in the spandrels, the medallion center and the outlines that keep every motif legible. Nothing is muddy and nothing has run. For buyers building a room around a traditional foundation, this sits squarely in the heart of red and burgundy Persian rugs, with enough blue and ivory in it to tie back to lighter upholstery.
Kashan: Central Persia and the Weave of This Rug
Kashan sits in central Persia, north of Isfahan, and its looms trace back to the Safavid court workshops. The town's reputation rests on soft lustrous local wool, disciplined cartoon-drawn curved line, and the formula you are looking at here: red field, navy lobed medallion, ivory spandrels. It is also the most recognizable Persian design in American interiors, which is why when you watch Shark Tank there is a Persian Kashan on the floor. The back of this piece, shown against a ruler, tells you what you need to know about the weaving: tight, upright rows of small knots, straight lines of warp, and a clear pattern reading through to the reverse, which is the mark of a workshop weaver following a drawing rather than improvising. The 3/8" pile has been kept low so the fine detail in the palmettes and the script of the signature stays crisp, and the dense cotton foundation gives a rug this size the body to lie flat and take the traffic of a formal room for generations.
