10'11" x 13'4" Persian Kashan Rug | Signed All-Over Floral Arabesque | Soft Celadon & Ivory Wool Pile

This is a quiet, pale, exceptionally well drawn Persian Kashan rug, hand-knotted in wool on a cotton foundation and finished with a 3/8" pile that still stands upright across the whole 131" width. Instead of the usual red ground, the weaver ran a soft celadon grey-green field under a continuous ivory arabesque, which is a far harder colour scheme to hold together over 13'4" of length and a sign of a workshop that knew what it was doing. A woven cartouche sits inside the field, so this is a signed piece rather than an anonymous village weaving. Condition is excellent, with even pile, straight sides and clean ivory fringe at both ends. Design and Motifs

The layout is an all-over floral arabesque with no central medallion, built from ivory cloud-scroll leaves that curl and mirror across all 4 quadrants. Inside that scrolling frame the weaver placed rows of palmettes and rosettes: 8 and 12 petal rosettes in sky blue, navy, rose and soft brown, small lotus heads, and shield-shaped cartouche blossoms outlined in dark navy. A single deep navy rosette with a red centre sits at the exact middle of the field and reads almost like a medallion from a distance, a subtle anchor rather than a loud one. The border repeats the same vocabulary at a larger scale, with broad ivory arabesque scrolls rolling continuously around the perimeter and no hard guard stripe interrupting them, which is why the pattern appears to run off the edges instead of stopping at them. The signature cartouche, woven in dark navy script on an ivory ground, is set within the field and shown in close-up in the photographs.

A Soft Celadon and Ivory Palette

The ground colour is the story here. It reads as a pale celadon, a grey-green with a cool cast that shifts toward soft seafoam in daylight and toward warm oyster under lamplight, and against it the ivory and cream arabesque work sits almost tonally, so the pattern is felt before it is read. The drawing lines are dark navy, used sparingly but consistently, which gives the whole surface its structure. Sky blue fills the smaller palmettes and leaf tips, while rose and dusty pink appear in scattered rosettes, and a warm rust brown runs through the outer scrolls and a few of the larger blossom hearts. Small dots of tomato red at the rosette centres are the only truly saturated notes in the rug. The overall effect is light and restrained: a large Persian rug that brightens a room instead of dominating it, and one that works with grey, ivory, pale oak and washed blue interiors.

Kashan Weaving and Quality

Kashan sits in central Persia, north of Isfahan, and its looms carry the Safavid court workshop tradition forward into modern weaving: soft lustrous local wool, curvilinear drawing, and a level of finish that separates town workshop pieces from village work. When you watch Shark Tank there is a Persian Kashan on the floor, which is how familiar the type has become to American eyes, usually in the classic red field and navy medallion formula. This piece is the collector's alternative to that formula, a signed workshop weaving in a light palette where every curve of the arabesque had to be plotted on the cartoon before a single knot was tied. The back photograph shows tight, even rows of knots on a cotton foundation with no slack or bulge, and the 3/8" wool pile has the density to take decades of traffic in a dining room or a formal living room at 10'11" x 13'4".
