10'2" x 13'11" Persian Kashan Rug | Signed Navy Medallion | Excellent Condition

A signature changes how you read a rug. Most Persian Kashan rugs leave the loom anonymous, so a woven cartouche in the border means the weaver was confident enough to put a name on the work. This 10'2" x 13'11" example is hand-knotted in wool on a cotton foundation with a 3/8" pile, and the drawing holds its symmetry cleanly across nearly 14 feet of length. The proportions make it one of the more usable 10x14 Persian rugs we carry, wide enough to seat a full furniture group without crowding the border. It ships with a certificate of authenticity documenting origin, materials and construction.

Design and Motifs

The center holds a large rounded medallion built up in concentric rings of arabesque tracery around an 8 petal rosette, with slender pendants reaching along the long axis. Around it the field is filled edge to edge with a continuous vine scroll carrying lotus palmettes, serrated leaves, small eight point rosettes and paisley shaped forms, all mirrored across both axes so the pattern reads the same from either end. The main border runs a stately alternation of large palmettes and curling leaf cartouches, framed by narrow guard stripes of running vine and star rosettes. The signature cartouche sits in the border, set in script against the same ground as the surrounding motifs, and the close detail photo shows how cleanly the knots hold each outline.

Navy, Ivory and Olive in the Pile

The field is a deep midnight navy, dark enough to read almost black in low light and clearly blue under a window. Against it the drawing is worked in ivory and a soft sage that keeps the pattern luminous rather than stark, with olive and moss green giving weight to the larger palmettes and leaves. The medallion pools into pale grey green and cream with faint rose and camel tones in its inner tracery, and the main border shifts to a pale cornflower blue ground that lifts the whole perimeter away from the dark field. Fine touches of warm gold appear in the small rosettes of the guard stripes. It is a cool, quiet palette overall, easy to pair with grey, cream and walnut interiors.

Kashan and the Quality of the Weave

Kashan sits in central Persia, north of Isfahan, and its looms trace back to the Safavid court workshops that set the standard for curved line drawing in the 16th century. The local wool is soft and lustrous, which is why a Kashan pile takes light the way it does here. On the back, the knotting is regular and tight enough to carry the fine vine work without breaking the curve, the selvedges are firm and the pile is even from end to end.
