10'2" x 13'9" Persian Kashan Rug | Signed Ivory All Over Floral Field | Excellent Condition

This is a room size piece from the classic school of Persian Kashan rugs, woven on a cotton foundation with a 3/8" wool pile and finished with a woven cartouche signature in the border, which tells you a named workshop stood behind it rather than an anonymous village loom. At 10'2" x 13'9" it covers a full living room or a long dining table with seating pulled back, and the drawing holds up under close inspection: the vine scroll never breaks, the palmettes repeat in mirrored pairs, and the border corners resolve cleanly on all 4 sides. The pile is still full and even, the ivory has not gone patchy, and the condition is excellent throughout. Design and Motifs

There is no central medallion here. The weaver chose an all over floral design, a continuous lattice of arabesque vines that carries lotus palmettes, 8 petal rosettes, tulip cups and long curling acanthus leaves from one end of the field to the other. Look at the close-up and you can see how each blossom is outlined twice, once in navy and once in a lighter blue, which is what gives the pattern its crisp edge against the open ground. The field repeats on a diagonal so the eye keeps moving, and small gold and rust buds are dropped into the gaps to break up the blue. The main border runs a wide sage green band of paired palmettes and turtle style forms, flanked by matched guard stripes of running vine on ivory and a fine outer stripe in navy. The signature cartouche sits in that main border, framed and centered, exactly where a Kashan workshop places its mark.

A Cool Ivory Field Worked in Blue and Sage

The ground is a warm undyed ivory, closer to cream than to white, and it carries a faint natural lustre where the light crosses the pile. Against it the palette is unusually cool for central Persia: sky blue and pale periwinkle in the smaller blossoms, deep navy in the outlines and leaf tips, and a soft sage to olive green that dominates the border and the larger palmette heads. Gold and mustard appear in small doses, usually in a flower center or a single leaf, with touches of camel brown, soft rose and one or two flecks of true red used as accents rather than as structure. The overall effect is quiet and architectural, a rug that reads as an ivory floor in a room and only reveals its blues and greens when you stand over it. It sits easily with cool grey, navy or pale wood interiors where a traditional red rug would fight the room.

Kashan: The Weaving Town and the Quality of the Weave

Kashan sits in central Persia, north of Isfahan, and its looms trace back to the Safavid court workshops that set the standard for curved line floral drawing. The town has always had two advantages: soft, lustrous local wool that takes dye deeply and holds a sheen for decades, and a workshop culture where the designer, the dyer and the weaver were separate specialists. That division of labour is what allows a field like this one, where the vine has to track accurately over nearly 14 feet without drifting. Kashan is also the Kashan you already know by sight: when you watch Shark Tank there is a Persian Kashan on the floor. On the back of this piece the knotting is tight and regular, the rows are straight, and the depressed warp typical of a good Kashan gives the pile its density underfoot. With a 3/8" pile depth and a cotton foundation, this is a rug built to be walked on for generations rather than kept behind a rope.
