9'10" x 13'9" Persian Kashan Rug | Ivory All Over Floral Field | Blue Palmettes, Excellent Condition

Most Kashans you see carry a single lobed medallion on a red ground. This one does the opposite: an uninterrupted ivory field, 9'10" x 13'9", covered edge to edge with blue and rust flowerheads on a fine scrolling vine. It is a quieter, more sophisticated reading of the Kashan tradition, and it is the reason this piece sits comfortably in rooms where a strong red medallion rug would dominate. The wool is soft and lustrous with a 3/8" pile, the cotton foundation is flat and true, and the rug lies dead level as shown in the second photograph. Among Persian Kashan rugs in this size class it is an unusually clean survivor, in excellent condition with full even pile throughout, and it ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming origin, materials and hand-knotted construction.

Design and Motifs

The field is a true all over floral design, drawn in mirrored quarters so the pattern repeats symmetrically across both axes without ever reading as mechanical. Large blue palmettes and 8 petal rosettes anchor the rhythm, linked by a thin ivory vine that loops through the ground and throws off serrated saz leaves, small cypress buds and paired curling tendrils. Between the major blossoms sit smaller lotus heads and rust colored buds that keep the negative space alive rather than empty. The border system is generous: a wide ivory main border of alternating palmettes and turning vinework, flanked by narrow guard stripes with running floral meanders, then an outer stripe in soft taupe that frames the whole composition. Corner resolution is clean, with the border pattern turning properly at all 4 corners rather than being cut off, which is a quick tell for workshop-level drawing.

The Ivory Ground and Its Blue Palette

The ground is a warm ivory, closer to unbleached cream than to stark white, with the natural sheen of good Kashan wool giving it a faint golden pull under lamplight. Against it the blues do the work, and they are not one blue but several: a deep indigo navy in the palmette centers and border blossoms, a mid cornflower blue in the rosettes, and a lighter dusty slate blue in the smaller leaves and the outlining. Rust and burnt sienna appear in measured amounts, mostly as flowerheads and as fine outlines that lift the blues, joined by soft brown, pale sage green and a hint of old rose in the interior blossoms. The main border repeats the same ivory ground, so the rug reads as one continuous pale surface rather than a field boxed in by a dark frame. In practical terms this is a light rug that brightens a room, and it suits ivory, grey, walnut and navy interiors equally well.

Kashan: The Town and the Weave

Kashan sits in central Persia, north of Isfahan, and its weaving lineage runs straight back to the Safavid court workshops. That inheritance shows in the drawing here, in the curvilinear vine and the disciplined repeat, and in the wool, which is the soft lustrous local fleece Kashan has always been known for. If you have watched Shark Tank, there is a Persian Kashan on the floor. The back, shown against a ruler in the final photograph, is tight and regular, with small even knots and straight rows that hold the fine vine scroll without blurring it, and the 3/8" pile has been kept low so the detail stays legible. At 9'10" x 13'9" this belongs with the 10x14 Persian rugs that fill a full formal room with furniture set on top, and the weight and structure are there to take that kind of daily use for generations.
