10' x 14' Agra Rug | Aqua Blue Field with Deep Green Floral Border | Hand-Knotted Wool, New

Most room-size traditional rugs arrive in red or ivory, which is exactly why this one stops people. The field is a soft aqua blue, the main border a deep forest green, and the two colors sit against each other with a confidence you rarely see in a floor piece this large. It is hand-knotted entirely by hand in India, with a natural wool pile on a cotton foundation, and at 10' x 14' it covers a full living room or a 10 seat dining table with the legs staying on the rug when the chairs pull back. The rug is new and never used, so the pile is full, the ends are tight and the selvedges are clean, and it is one of the more usable choices among 10 x 14 hand-knotted rugs for a room that already has wood and warm metals in it. Every rug we ship leaves with a certificate of authenticity confirming it is a genuine hand-knotted piece.

Design and Motifs

There is no central medallion here. The drawing is an all-over floral design built on a lattice of thin scrolling vines that repeats across the whole field, which is what makes the rug so easy to furnish over: sofas and a coffee table sit on it without hiding a focal point. Large gold and ivory palmettes anchor the repeat, alternating with shaded rosettes, curled cloudband forms and small serrated leaves picked out in deep brown and coral. The main border carries a procession of ivory palmettes and split leaf forms on the green ground, separated by fine vine work, with a salmon and gold reciprocal guard stripe on the inner edge and a broad gold outer band of small leaves and rosettes on the outside. Corners are resolved properly, with the border pattern turning cleanly at all 4 corners rather than being cut off, which is a quality marker on a rug this wide.

The Aqua, Green and Gold Color Story

The field color is the reason to buy this rug. It reads as a pale aqua blue with a faint green cast, closer to seafoam than to sky, and it shifts with the light: cool and almost gray under north-facing daylight, warmer and softer under lamps in the evening. Against it, the palmettes are worked in antique gold, honey and ivory, with outlines in a dark walnut brown that gives each flower its shape from across the room. Small accents of coral and dusty rose run through the vines and reappear in the salmon guard border, where they pick up any warm tone already in a room. The main border is a saturated forest green, deep enough to frame the light field firmly, and the outer band of golden ochre keeps the whole rug from feeling cold. The palette works beautifully with cream walls, walnut and oak furniture, brass fittings and natural linen, and it is a genuine alternative for anyone who does not want another red floor.

Woven in India: Agra Tradition and Weave Quality

India is where most of the world's best contemporary hand-knotted weaving is now done, and this piece shows why. The Agra tradition goes back to the Mughal court workshops, where weavers took classical floral drawing and gave it the softer, more open feeling that still defines the style, and modern Indian looms working in that tradition produce exactly this kind of large-format floor piece: even knotting across a 10 foot width, straight sides, a firm cotton foundation and a dense natural wool pile that has body underfoot without being coarse. The back shows a clear, regular knot grid, the pile is cut at a medium height so the drawing stays crisp, and the wool has a quiet natural sheen where the light crosses it. If you are weighing this against a Persian piece, our guide to what separates a Persian rug from an Oriental rug explains where the real differences lie. This one is brand new, unused, and ready to go straight down.
