10' x 18'7" Persian Kashan Rug | All Over Floral Beige Field | Never Used Oversize

This is a full palace length piece, 10 feet wide and 18 feet 7 inches long, hand-knotted in central Persia and kept in storage since it left the loom in the 2000's. The pile has never been walked on: the wool still stands up sharp and clean, the fringes are intact on both ends, and the selvedges are tight the full run of the rug. As an authentic Persian Kashan rug, it follows the classic city formula with one change that makes it far easier to live with, an all over floral field instead of a central medallion, so furniture can sit anywhere on it without cutting through a design. Very few oversize Persian rugs in this length come to market unused. It ships with a certificate of authenticity documenting origin, materials and hand-knotted construction.

Design and Motifs

The field is a continuous all over composition: thin dark vines scroll the full 18'7" length, carrying lotus palmettes, split leaves, small 8 petal rosettes and clusters of tulip and carnation heads. The drawing is mirrored across the long axis, so every large palmette on the left has its twin on the right, which is what keeps a field this size from looking random. Larger dark palmettes act as anchor points at regular intervals, with lighter blue blossoms and rust buds filling between them. The frame is a triple border system: a wide main band carrying a turtle palmette and rosette repeat, flanked by ivory guard stripes with an alternating rosette and leaf chain, and outside those a fine minor stripe with a running black tendril. Corners resolve cleanly, the rosette in each of the 4 corners lands exactly where it should rather than being cut off, which is the mark of a properly cartooned city weaving rather than a village improvisation.

The Beige Field and Soft Persian Blue Border

The ground is a warm beige, not a stark white ivory and not a yellow gold, closer to unbleached wool with a faint peach warmth coming off the natural fleece. Against it the palette is unusually soft for a Kashan: the main border is a light Persian blue, almost a pale teal in raking light, and the vine work runs through sky blue, powder blue and deep navy outlining. Browns do the heavy lifting where you would normally expect red, with chocolate and warm coffee tones in the large palmette centers, while rust and terracotta appear only in small quantities on buds, leaf tips and the guard stripe rosettes. True red is used as a highlight, a few knots at a time, in flower hearts. Olive and sage green thread through the leaves. The result is a light, airy rug that reads almost neutral from standing height and only shows its full color range when you crouch down to it.

Kashan Weaving and the Quality of This Piece

Kashan sits in central Persia, north of Isfahan, and its looms trace back to the Safavid court workshops.
