9'10" x 15' Persian Kashan Rug | Beige All-Over Floral Field | Semi-Antique Oversize

This is a semi-antique Persian Kashan rug measuring 9'10" x 15", hand-knotted in central Persia with a 100% wool pile on a cotton foundation. Instead of the familiar lobed medallion, the weaver filled the entire beige field with a continuous floral lattice and framed it in three borders, which is the harder of the two Kashan compositions to draw well. The pile has aged into a soft, slightly lustrous surface with the mellow tonality that only decades of settling produce, and the rug lies flat and true with even pile from end to end. Design and Motifs

The field is a true all-over floral design, built from a network of thin navy vines that split, curl back on themselves and carry palmettes, serrated saz leaves, multi petal rosettes and small cypress-like sprays across the whole 15' length. The drawing repeats on a mirrored axis rather than a plain grid, so the eye keeps finding new pairs of blossoms rather than a stamped motif. Three borders enclose it: a narrow inner guard of blue and ivory rosettes, a wide burgundy main border of alternating palmettes and lobed cartouche-shaped blossoms, and a rust outer band carrying its own vine of ivory rosettes and boteh-like buds. The corners resolve cleanly, with the main border pattern turning the angle without breaking stride, which is a fair indicator of a drawn cartoon rather than an improvised village copy.

A Beige Field Framed in Burgundy and Rust

The ground is a warm beige, closer to sand and light camel than to a cold ivory, with gentle abrash running in soft horizontal bands where the dye lots changed on the loom. Against it the floral work is unusually varied: indigo and mid blue outlines, teal and sea green leaves, dusty rose and salmon blossoms, olive green tendrils, deep aubergine accents and small ivory highlights that keep the pattern legible from across the room. The main border is a rich burgundy that has softened toward wine and raspberry, and the outer band is a clear rust terracotta that warms the whole perimeter. Blue guard stripes separate every band, so the color moves from pale center to deep frame to warm edge in three clean steps. The close-up photographs show the wool's sheen and the full range of secondary tones better than the flat overhead view does.

Kashan: Central Persia's Court Weaving City

Kashan sits in central Persia, north of Isfahan, and its looms trace back to the Safavid court workshops that set the standard for classical floral weaving. The city is known for soft, lustrous local wool and for disciplined, curvilinear drawing, and both are present here in the fluid vine work and the dense, tightly packed knots visible on the back.
