11'11" x 18'6" Moroccan Rug | Oversize Contemporary Berber Abstract | 100% Wool, Never Used
Very few pieces in the Moroccan idiom are woven this large, which is the first thing you notice about this 11'11" x 18'6" rug: a tribal drawing language built for a small nomadic tent, scaled up to fill a great room without losing its handwriting. The weaver worked freehand across blocks of rose, ivory, chocolate and light blue, dropping rows of dashes, lozenges and thin wandering lines wherever the composition asked for them. The pile is a generous 1/2" of 100% natural wool with a soft, slightly shaggy handle, the ends finish in braided kilim bands and heavy grey tassels, and the whole piece is brand new and never used. If you have been looking at oversize 12 x 18 rugs and finding only formal traditional options, this is the contemporary alternative. It ships with a certificate of authenticity.
Design and Motifs
There is no medallion and no formal border here. The field is divided into irregular color blocks, almost like torn paper, and the motifs run across those seams rather than respecting them: tall forked staffs, wavy charcoal ribbons, stacked chevrons, small stepped houses, and rows of tiny dashes that read as stitching. A large blush and charcoal lozenge anchors the lower center, drawn with a deliberately uneven outline that shows the hand behind it, while a panel of ivory ground at the lower left carries a light blue diamond lattice dotted with brown and rose squares, a direct quote from classic Berber weaving. Scattered kite-shaped diamonds in blue, ivory and chocolate float through the upper half. It sits comfortably among modern and contemporary rugs while still being entirely hand-knotted.
A Palette of Rose, Light Blue and Raw Sienna
The dominant tone is a dusty rose that shifts between blush and salmon depending on how the light crosses the pile, and it covers roughly half the field in soft abrasive patches. Against it sit warm undyed ivory and cream, a rich chocolate and raw sienna brown that reads almost cinnamon in the corner detail, and a cool light blue that ranges from a pale washed sky to a deeper denim in the upper left block and the right hand column. Charcoal and near black appear only as drawing, in outlines, ribbons and the twin forms inside the central lozenge, and that restraint is what keeps the whole thing calm. Tiny flecks of turquoise, rust and gold sit in the brown ground like confetti. The selvages are wrapped in alternating periwinkle and apricot, and the striped kilim ends pick up every color in the field.
Hand-Knotted in Pakistan in the Moroccan Tradition
This rug was hand-knotted in Pakistan, where the workshops have quietly become the best source in the world for large-format tribal and Moroccan-style weaving in good natural wool. The back photograph shows exactly what you want to see at this scale: even rows, a hand-spun wool foundation with the wefts left in their natural heathered colors, and hand-braided end finishes rather than machine binding. A loom wide enough to carry 11'11" of warp, held straight over 18'6" of weaving, is a serious piece of work and takes a team many months. Like any hand-knotted Oriental rug, it is built to be walked on for decades, and it belongs with the genuinely oversized rugs that can hold a 20 foot room on their own.
