8'8" x 11'11" Wool and Silk Oriental Rug | Transitional All-Over Floral | Olive Brown | Never Used
This is a quiet, confident piece: an open olive brown field, no medallion, and a loose garden of flowering stems drifting corner to corner in gold, rust and sage. The pile is wool with silk drawn into the flowers and leaves, so the blossoms catch light and shift tone as you walk past while the ground stays matte and calm. At 8'8" x 11'11" it falls squarely into the 9x12 area rugs range, the size most buyers need for a full seating group or a long dining table. It is brand new, never walked on, and ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming it is genuinely hand-knotted.
Please Note About the Photographs:
These photographs were taken in our warehouse under mixed light, and the reflection off the silk makes the field look warmer in some frames and greener in others. Those shifts are camera and lighting, not variation in the weaving, not fade and not wear. The rug is new and has never been used.
Design and Motifs
The drawing is transitional rather than strictly classical: an all-over scheme built from thin vine stems that wander instead of repeating on a rigid grid. Along them sit full-face rosettes, fan shaped carnations, curled palmettes and broad serrated leaves, some of them drawn like maple leaves in green shading to rust. Scale is deliberately mixed, with large blossoms the size of a hand set beside tiny 5 petal buds and single floating leaves, which keeps the field from ever looking like wallpaper. There is no medallion and no heavy multi band border. Instead the field runs almost to the edge and is stopped by a single stepped key line, a crenellated ribbon in pale gold that squares off each of the 4 corners, with a last row of flowering stems outside it. The result is an old formal vocabulary handled with a lot of air around it.
Olive Green, Rust and Gold Across the Field
The ground is an olive brown that behaves differently depending on light: warm mocha and camel in raking sun, a deeper drab olive in shade, with soft abrash banding across the width from hand spun, hand dyed yarn. Against it the flowers work in a tight earth palette. Antique gold and honey carry most of the blossoms, rust and terracotta fill the petal edges, and small burgundy hearts anchor the rosette centers. The leaves bring the green: sage, moss and a cooler blue green on the silk passages, with a few teal outlines that read almost turquoise up close. Ivory and pale cream appear in the highlight petals and in the stepped border line, and the cotton fringe at both ends is a clean off white. There is no bright red, no navy and no black ground here, which is what makes this rug easy to place: it sits with walnut, brass, leather and greige without fighting anything.
Made in India and the Quality of the Weave
India is where most of the world's good contemporary hand-knotted work is now made, and this piece shows why. The knotting is even across the full width, the vine lines stay thin and unbroken through their curves, and the back shows crisp definition with no crowding where the flowers overlap. It is built on a cotton foundation with a wool pile lifted by silk in the floral drawing, finished with flat woven ends and plain hand wrapped selvedges. As an Oriental rug it borrows its floral grammar from the classical workshops but resolves it in the softer, more open manner buyers of modern and contemporary hand-knotted rugs ask for. Nothing about it has been walked on yet, and a wool and silk pile of this density will take decades of use before it begins to show a path.
