Design and Motifs

There is no central medallion here. The drawing is a true all over floral repeat, built from broad gold cloudband ribbons that swing through the field and link one large palmette to the next. Between them sit fan shaped blossoms, small 8 petal rosettes, budding tulip forms and long serrated leaves drawn in green and burgundy. The close detail shots show how much line work goes into each palmette: an outlined gold body, a dark green and black heart, and pink and ivory petals feathered at the tips. A narrow inner guard stripe in olive separates the field from the main border, which carries its own vine scroll of curled acanthus leaves and open flowers, and a second olive guard band with alternating star rosettes finishes the outer edge. The layout is symmetrical along both axes, so the rug reads correctly from either end of a room.

Dusty Mauve, Olive Green and the Silk Luster
