This is a hand-knotted Oushak in the quiet register that decorators keep asking for and rarely find in a true room size: a soft sage green field, a wide camel beige border and coral drawing that reads warm without ever turning bright. At 11'2" x 14'2" it is a genuine great-room piece, one of the large hand-knotted area rugs that can carry a full seating group with the furniture legs all on the wool. The pile is natural wool on a cotton foundation, woven in the 2000's and never put on a floor, so the nap still stands full and even from selvage to selvage. Design and Motifs

The field carries a classic all over design rather than a central medallion, which is exactly why a rug this size works under large furniture: there is no single focal point to bury under a sofa. Broad coral palmettes sit on straight vertical stems, flanked by pairs of large ivory and blue leaf forms that curl outward like open shells, with smaller tulip and blossom heads filling the gaps and thin ivory vines tying the whole lattice together. The drawing is deliberately bold and slightly angular, the Oushak habit of taking a court floral and redrawing it at village scale. Three borders frame it: a wide beige main border of coral rosettes and leafy cartouches, a soft blue outer band of small coral diamonds, and a narrow ivory guard stripe that keeps the two apart. Look closely at the close-up photograph and you can see the gentle horizontal shift in the green, a natural abrash from hand-dyed wool that gives the field its depth.

A Muted Palette of Sage Green, Beige and Coral

The ground is a low, dusty sage green that leans grey-green in daylight and warms toward olive under lamplight, and it never fights the furniture around it. Against that sits the coral: a soft salmon terracotta used for the palmettes, the stems and the little diamonds in the outer band, warm enough to pick up leather, brick and wood tones in a room. Ivory and cream do the outlining work, lifting every leaf and vine off the green so the pattern stays legible from standing height. The main border is a mellow camel beige, slightly sandy, and the outer band a chalky powder blue that repeats in the small rosettes scattered through the field. There is no black, no saturated red and no hard white anywhere in this rug, which is what makes it so easy to live with in a neutral, coastal or transitional interior.

Oushak Weaving in Western Anatolia

Oushak, or Usak, is a weaving town in western Anatolia with a documented carpet tradition going back to the 15th century, and its reputation has always rested on two things: wool and color. The local fleece is long-stapled and glossy, it takes soft dyes beautifully and it wears like iron, which is why antique Oushaks turn up with generations of use and still hold their pile. This is a modern piece woven in that tradition, hand-knotted on a cotton foundation at a moderate village knot count, with a medium pile that is exactly right for a bold large-scale drawing like this one.
