10'9" x 13'3" Turkish Oushak Rug | Ivory Field, Sage Green & Rust All Over Floral | Soft Natural Wool

This is a large hand-knotted Oushak woven in Turkey, measuring 10'9" x 13'3", with a pale ivory field carried edge to edge by an open all over floral drawing rather than a central medallion. The pile is soft natural wool on a cotton foundation, clipped low enough that the drawing reads crisply while the wool still holds a quiet sheen in daylight, visible in the close-up photographs of the field and in the back-and-pile fold shots. Scale is the point here: at 129" x 159" it sits comfortably in the 10x13 room size class, big enough to run under a full seating group or a long dining table with chairs pulled out. Design and Motifs

The field is a true all over floral pattern built on a faint lattice of thin vine scrolls, drawn so lightly that the ground stays open and airy. Along that vine sit broad 8 point rosettes with ringed ivory centers, split palmettes, crowned tulip heads, blocky green stepped medallion flowerheads filled with tiny star florets, and big serrated saz leaves that curl back on themselves like question marks. Small detached blossoms and single rosettes float in the gaps where the drawing would otherwise go quiet. The main border is generous and cartouche driven: an undulating cloudband ribbon links alternating palmettes and blue arrowhead devices, framed on both sides by narrow reciprocal guard stripes. The 4 corners resolve with large blue and rust corner devices rather than a forced repeat, which is the mark of a weaver following a proper cartoon instead of improvising at the ends.

Color Palette: Ivory, Sage Green and Rust

The ground is a warm ivory that shifts between buttermilk and pale sand depending on which way the pile lies, and in the raking photographs it reads almost golden where light catches the nap. Against that sit two lead colors: a soft sage green, sometimes closer to celadon, used for the serrated leaves, the stepped flowerheads and the ribbon outlines, and a muted rust that runs from terracotta into dusty salmon in the rosette petals and border palmettes. Cooler soft blue accents appear throughout the drawing, in the arrowhead border devices, the petal centers and the small tipped buds, and they keep the warm tones from going flat. Nothing in the palette is saturated or harsh; the whole rug behaves like a neutral with color in it, which is why pieces in this ivory and beige family work under both traditional case goods and plain modern upholstery.

Oushak Weaving in Turkey

Oushak, in western Anatolia, has been a weaving center for centuries and gave its name to a whole family of large format rugs: bold scale, open fields, spacious floral drawing and a soft blond palette that western rooms took to immediately. This piece is a recent weave in that tradition, hand-knotted knot by knot on a cotton warp with a wool pile, and the back photographs show even rows and a consistent, moderate knot count, which is exactly right for an Oushak. The Turkish village weave was never meant to be a microscopically fine city rug; it is meant to be large, tough and generous, with a comfortable hand underfoot. As an Oriental rug in the Anatolian line rather than a Persian one, it offers that scale and that pale ground at a price a comparable city workshop piece would never reach, and the condition is flawless with full pile and clean, straight sides.
