This is a new hand-knotted Oushak in the quiet register that decorators keep asking for: a light natural, faintly silvery grey field carrying loose sprays of rust, ivory, camel and sage. It measures 7'11" x 9'11", which drops neatly into a standard 8 x 10 footprint, and it has never been used. The fine wool pile is short and even, with a soft sheen visible in the close-up photographs, and the handle is supple rather than stiff. Design and Motifs

The drawing is classic Oushak: an open all-over field rather than a central medallion, with widely spaced palmettes, serrated leaves, spindly vines and small rosettes floating on a bare ground. Two large rust palmettes sit off axis on the left and right, one outlined in deep red with a saffron center, the other in soft terracotta, while long curved leaves picked out in ivory, slate blue and red sweep diagonally across the middle. Thin, almost calligraphic stems wander between the motifs and are deliberately left unfinished in places, which is the charm of this idiom. The main border repeats an 8 petal rosette and a stepped cruciform flower in rust, sage and camel, framed on both sides by narrow guard stripes of small reciprocal figures in ivory and grey. Nothing is crowded, and the field reads as space first and pattern second.

The Light Natural Palette

The ground is a pale, warm grey that shifts toward greige under lamplight and toward cool stone in daylight, with subtle abrash banding running across the width, exactly what you want from wool dyed in small lots. Against it the accents are muted rather than loud: a true brick rust in the palmettes and the small cross flowers, a softer coral orange in the secondary blossoms, sage and olive green in the leaf forms, camel and pale saffron in the cartouche fills, and small touches of slate blue in a few rosettes and leaf outlines. Ivory carries the vines, the guard stripes and the outer border ground, lifting the whole surface. The overall effect is the light natural neutral that works over pale oak, wide plank white wash or polished concrete, while the rust keeps it from going flat.
