11'9" x 17'2" Chobi Peshawar Ziegler Rug | Neutral Pale Beige & Sage Green | Brand New Oversize
At 141 inches wide and 206 inches long, this Chobi Peshawar Ziegler is a true floor-filler, the kind of piece bought for a great room, a long formal living room or an open plan space where a 10x14 stops short. It is hand-knotted in handspun wool on a cotton foundation, with a low quarter inch pile that lets the drawing stay crisp, and it has never been laid in a home. The whole rug lives in one quiet register of pale beige, sand and soft sage green, so it reads almost as texture from across the room and only shows its floral detail when you stand over it. Buyers shopping oversize 12x17 rugs in a neutral palette will know how rarely this combination of scale, tone and hand-knotted quality turns up. Every rug we sell ships with a certificate of authenticity.
Please Note About the Photographs:
A faint vertical line runs down the center of the rug in several of the floor photographs. That is a fold mark from being rolled and stored on a pallet, not wear, not fading and not damage. It relaxes out once the rug is laid flat, and every rug leaves our Freeport warehouse professionally steamed and pressed before shipping. The lighting also varies between the overhead studio image and the warehouse floor shots, so the field looks warmer in one and cooler in the others.
Design and Motifs
There is no medallion here. The field carries a loose all-over design of small stylized blossoms, hooked leaf forms, 4 petal rosettes, tiny star bursts and slender vessel shapes, drawn well apart so the ground breathes between them. Because the motifs sit only a shade or two away from the field color, the pattern behaves like a watermark rather than a print. The border does the structural work: 5 bands in all, starting from an outer stripe of angular hooks and bars, then the wide main band of interlaced strapwork and tall arched panels that look almost architectural, then a narrow line of crosses and 8 petal rosettes, then a scrolling vine band studded with flowerheads, and finally a pale guard stripe running to the fringe. Look at the corners in the detail photos and the arch panels turn cleanly, which is the mark of a weaver working from a properly resolved cartoon rather than improvising at the end of a run.
A Palette of Pale Beige, Sand and Sage Green
The color story is deliberately quiet. The ground sits between sand and pale beige, cooling toward a soft greige and a muted sage green through the center of the field, then warming to honey and light camel across the wide border. Motifs are picked out in ivory and cream against faintly rose-tan and taupe outlines, so contrast never rises above a whisper. Handspun wool takes dye unevenly by nature, and you can see gentle horizontal abrash washing across the field in the low angle photographs, one band a touch deeper than the next. That movement is what keeps a pale rug of this size from looking flat or machine-made. In practice it is an easy rug to build a room around: it will sit under oak, walnut or painted furniture without competing, and it pushes warm neutral, sage and off-white schemes rather than dictating them.
Peshawar Weaving and the Ziegler Tradition
Peshawar in northern Pakistan is one of the great centers of hand-knotted weaving working today, and Chobi is its signature. The name means wood colored, a reference to the vegetable and natural dyes that give these rugs their soft, sun-faded tonality straight off the loom. The Ziegler design itself descends from the large-format commercial workshop weavings of the late 19th century, open fields and broad borders drawn for Western rooms, and Peshawar workshops have made that vocabulary their own. The wool here is handspun and dense, the knotting is even edge to edge across a very wide loom (holding 141 inches straight over 17 feet of length is not a small achievement), and the low clipped pile gives the drawing its definition. If you are weighing this against a curvilinear workshop piece, our guide to what separates a Persian rug from an Oriental rug is worth reading before you decide.
