This is a genuine room-filling piece: 12' x 18'1" of hand-knotted wool in the Chobi Ziegler manner, woven in Peshawar and never used. The field is a soft rust that reads terracotta in daylight, covered edge to edge with a repeating lattice of cream and pale sage palmettes, and framed by an unusually wide ivory border that gives the whole rug a calm, settled look rather than a loud one. The pile is 5/16" wool on a cotton foundation, dense enough to take real traffic in a great room or a long formal dining space, and the finish has that gently washed, low-sheen surface collectors look for in this weave. Design and Motifs

There is no central medallion here. Instead the weavers ran a classic all-over floral design across the entire field: large lobed palmettes set on a slow curving vine, alternating with 8 petal rosettes, serrated acanthus leaves and small teardrop buds that fill the gaps between the vine scrolls. The repeat is drawn in generous scale, which is exactly what an 18 foot length needs, and the pattern mirrors left to right so the rug reads symmetrically from either end. The framing is a 3 band system: a broad main border carrying alternating diamond cartouches, star rosettes and stylized leaf sprays, flanked by narrow guard stripes of linked quatrefoils and tiny florettes. The corner detail photo shows the border turning cleanly, with the main border motifs resolving into the corner instead of being cut off, a sign the drawing was planned across the full loom width rather than improvised. Fine outlining in a darker rust separates each element from the ground so the pattern stays legible even from standing height.

Color: Rust, Sage Green and Beige

The ground is rust, a warm brick to terracotta tone that shifts subtly across the width with the natural variation of hand-spun, hand-dyed wool. Against it the palmettes and rosettes are worked in beige and cream, several of them shaded with pale sage green so the larger flower heads have depth rather than sitting flat. The wide main border is the lightest area of the rug, a pale beige to soft celadon ground that carries its motifs in muted olive, sage and a light brown-rust; the guard stripes pick up the same greens at small scale, which ties the border back to the field. Overall contrast is deliberately low, and that is the appeal: the rust reads rich without being fire-engine red, and the green is a dusty, botanical sage rather than an emerald. On oak or walnut flooring it warms a room instantly, and it sits comfortably with cream upholstery, brass, leather and antique wood.

Peshawar Weaving and the Ziegler Tradition

Chobi and Ziegler rugs are woven in and around Peshawar in northwest Pakistan, on looms that have specialized in this style for decades. The design lineage goes back to the late 19th century commissions of the Ziegler firm, which commissioned large-scale floral field rugs with softened palettes for Western houses, and the modern Peshawar workshops still weave to that brief: hand-spun wool, hand-knotted pile, then a wash that mellows the dye and relaxes the surface.
