This is a new, never used Chobi Peshawar in the classic Ziegler drawing, hand-knotted in natural hand-spun wool on a cotton foundation and measuring 9'2" x 11'5". The wool is the reason to look twice: it takes the dye unevenly in the best way, so the cinnamon rust ground breathes rather than sits flat, and the pile carries a low satin sheen that shifts as you walk past it. Chobi work of this grade is the quiet end of the Oriental rug market, built for rooms where the furniture and the art should still be the loudest thing present, and this piece sits squarely in the most useful of the 9x12 area rug proportions. It ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming the hand-knotted construction, the natural wool pile and the origin.

Design and Motifs

The field carries a true all over design, with no central medallion anchoring the composition. Instead, broad serrated leaves and curling arabesque vines run the length of the rug, linking rosettes, small 4 petal blossoms and large open palmettes, with one ivory rosette sitting near the center of the field as a natural focal point. Every motif is outlined in dark coffee brown, which keeps the drawing legible against the soft ground and gives the whole surface a drawn, almost printed clarity. The main border is wide and ivory, filled with a repeating lotus palmette alternating with curled leaf cartouches that resolve neatly at all 4 corners. On either side of it run paisley boteh minor borders and a fine rope-twist stripe, and the outer edge closes with a plain cinnamon band that frames the rug the way a mat frames a print.

A Neutral Palette of Cinnamon, Tan and Sage

The field reads as neutral cinnamon rust, a warm terracotta that softens toward dusty rose where the light catches the pile and deepens toward brick where it does not. Against it, the ornament is drawn in tan, wheat gold and pale cream, so the contrast is tonal rather than sharp. The ivory border is the lightest note in the rug, closer to warm champagne than white, and it lifts the whole piece. Outlines and stems are soft coffee brown, nearly chocolate in the border details, and there are faint sage green shadows inside the larger leaves that only show at close range. Peshawar Weaving and the Ziegler Tradition

Chobi rugs are woven around Peshawar in northern Pakistan by weavers working in the Ziegler manner, a 19th century commercial style that took the old floral vocabulary and opened it up: fewer motifs, larger drawing, softer color. The wool is hand-spun rather than machine-spun, which is exactly why the ground varies in tone from one pass to the next, and the palette comes from muted natural dyeing rather than high-saturation chemistry. Turn the rug over, as in the back photograph, and the knotting is even and tight with the pattern reading clearly from the reverse, the mark of disciplined workshop weaving rather than rushed production. The pile is a medium height with good body underfoot, dense enough to hold furniture legs and to take daily traffic in a main room without crushing.
