8' x 10' Peshawar Chobi Oriental Rug | Eggplant Brown All Over Floral | Ziegler Design
This is a brand new, never used 8' x 10' Chobi Ziegler woven in the Peshawar workshops of northern Pakistan, hand-knotted in wool on a cotton foundation and still carrying its original weaver's tag. The appeal is the field color: a deep eggplant brown that reads almost aubergine in daylight and nearly chocolate in lamplight, drawn over with a continuous floral lattice in gold, sage, ivory and salmon. The wide ivory main border gives the whole piece a formal frame without making it heavy, which is why this colorway works as easily under a dining table as it does in a paneled study. Every rug we ship carries a certificate of authenticity confirming it is hand-knotted and describing the piece exactly as listed here.
Design and Motifs
There is no central medallion. Instead the weaver filled the field with an all over floral design built on a slim vine scroll that loops and doubles back across the whole surface, carrying open rosettes, lotus palmettes, tulip buds and long serrated leaves that curl back on themselves. Look closely at the center of the field and you can see the drawing is mirrored top to bottom and left to right, so the pattern repeats cleanly in all 4 directions and the rug can be turned without the design looking upside down. The main border holds large gold palmettes outlined in deep red, alternating with cypress sprays and small 8 petal rosettes on ivory, bracketed by narrow gold guard stripes of running flowerheads. The corners are resolved rather than cut off, which is a sign the design was planned to the exact loom width, and the whole layout stays airy because the vine is kept thin and the blossoms are spaced rather than crowded.
Color: Eggplant Brown, Ivory and Antique Gold
The ground is the rarest part of this rug. Dark fields in this family are usually navy or madder red, so an eggplant brown field puts it in a much smaller group of brown area rugs that still read as traditional. The brown is not flat: the hand-spun wool takes dye unevenly on purpose, so the field shifts between plum brown and cocoa as the light moves across the pile. Against it sit antique gold and camel palmettes, soft sage and olive leaves, ivory and cream blossoms, and the quieter accents that make the piece work in a room, muted salmon and peach petals, dusty blue and grey leaf tips, and small flickers of deep burgundy that pick up the outlines in the border. The ivory main border is a warm ivory rather than a white, with the same gold and green vocabulary carried into it, and the outer edge returns to the dark eggplant brown so the rug finishes on the same note it starts on. Ivory fringe at both ends.
Peshawar Weaving and the Ziegler Tradition
Peshawar, in the northwest of Pakistan, is one of the few places still producing classical workshop drawing at serious scale, and the Chobi Ziegler is its signature product. The Ziegler name goes back to the 19th century firm that commissioned softened, open versions of classical patterns for European and American interiors, and the name Chobi refers to the wood toned, muted dye palette these workshops favor. The weave here is firm and even, the wool is hand-spun and heavy in lanolin so the pile has a slight sheen and resists soiling, and the pile height is short enough to keep the fine vine work legible. If you are weighing this against other options in the same footprint, it sits comfortably among 8x10 Oriental rugs as a durable, decoration-driven choice, and if you want the background on how this category differs from older city work, our guide on what makes an Oriental rug is the place to start.
