8' x 10' Chobi Peshawar Oriental Rug | Antique Ziegler All-Over Floral Design | Warm Neutral Pastels, Brand New

Brand new and never walked on, this 8' x 10' Chobi Peshawar rug borrows its drawing from an antique Ziegler Mahal pattern and resolves it in a palette of warm neutral pastels. It is hand-knotted in hand-spun wool on a cotton foundation, and the pile is clipped low, about 1/4 inch, which is exactly why the ivory tracery reads so cleanly against the soft blue-grey ground instead of blurring into it. The weave is even end to end, the selvedges are tight, and the back shown in the detail photos is flat and uniform with no cupping or pull. Among 8x10 Oriental rugs this is the quiet option, a traditional pattern with none of the weight of a red and navy formal piece, and it ships with our certificate of authenticity confirming it as a genuine hand-knotted rug.

Please Note About the Photographs:

The full overhead photograph reads warmer and more uniformly beige than the rug does in person. The close-up images are the accurate reading: the open field is a soft blue-grey that the ivory and sand floral work sits on top of. Judge the color from the detail shots. Every rug is professionally steamed and pressed before it leaves our warehouse.

Design and Motifs

There is no medallion. The field runs as a continuous all-over floral design, a lattice of broad lotus palmettes and 8 petal rosettes linked by curling split leaves and thin scrolling vines that repeat up the length of the rug. Each palmette is outlined in walnut brown, which is the detail that keeps the drawing legible in such a pale palette, and the small cross-shaped blossom at the center of every rosette is picked out in ivory. Framing the field is a wide camel main border carrying alternating palmettes and trailing vine, flanked by narrow guard stripes with a reciprocal trefoil meander, then a final flat-woven edge. The corners turn properly, with the border repeat stepping around all 4 corners rather than being cut off, which is a mark of a workshop weaver following a careful cartoon. Because the pattern is directionless, the rug can be rotated or turned 90 degrees without the design ever looking upside down.

A Warm Pastel Palette of Blue-Grey, Ivory and Sand

The open ground is a muted blue-grey with a faint green cast, closer to celadon than to any true blue, and it shifts gently across the width the way hand-spun wool always does. Over it the floral work is drawn in layered neutrals: a soft ivory for the palmette bodies, a deeper sand beige for the leaves and vine, and thin walnut brown outlines that give the pattern its edge. The main border steps up into camel and light tan, warmer than the field, while the guard stripes drop back into the same pale blue-grey so the frame reads as a band of color rather than a hard line. There is no black, no bright red, nothing that fights the room. For buyers shopping light and airy beige and ivory rugs, this one brings the same softness but adds the cool blue-grey base that keeps warm neutrals from looking flat next to grey floors or pale upholstery.

Chobi Peshawar Weaving and the Quality of the Knot

Peshawar, in northwest Pakistan, is the workshop center that revived the old Ziegler Mahal patterns for modern interiors, and it is the source of most of the good soft-palette weaving sold today. Chobi takes its name from the word for wood, a nod to the plant and walnut husk dye baths these workshops are known for and to the gentle washed finish that follows. This piece is a full workshop product: hand-spun wool knotted on a cotton warp, a single row of weft packed between knot rows, and a shear taken low enough to expose every outline. The back in the detail images shows regular, square knot rows with no skipped passes, and the pile has the slightly dry, hard-wearing handle that makes a good Oriental rug last through decades of traffic. Nothing about it has been used, cut, repaired or reduced; it is as it came off the loom.

This piece is the only one of it, so the things worth knowing about it are particular to it. If you want to talk through the size, the colour in your own light, or the weave, speak to someone here first.
