It is a hand-knotted Oriental rug in the Ziegler manner, with a deep chocolate brown field, a wide golden ivory border and a pile of soft hand-spun wool that catches the light differently from every angle. Design and Motifs

There is no central medallion here. Instead the weaver ran a balanced all-over floral design across the whole field: large open palmettes, 8 petal and many petal rosettes, tulip heads and long serrated leaves, all strung on an ivory and gold vine that curves through the brown ground in a loose lattice. Because the format is square, the drawing repeats outward from the center in 4 directions with unusual symmetry, so the rug reads correctly from any side of the room. The main border carries alternating dark cartouche palmettes and pale flowering sprays, framed by narrow rose and green guard stripes and a small barber pole outer stripe. Corner resolution is handled cleanly, which on a square piece is a fair test of the workshop.

A Dark Brown Field Lit by Gold, Sage and Rust

The field is a genuinely dark brown, closer to espresso than to black, and it moves. Hand-spun yarn takes dye unevenly by nature, so horizontal striations of slightly warmer and cooler brown drift across the ground and keep a large expanse of dark color from going flat. Against it the flowers are drawn in soft gold, camel, sage green, dusty rose and cream, with small hits of deep rust red at the flower centers and in the tiny border blossoms. The wide main border is a golden ivory that lifts almost to honey where the light hits the pile, then settles back toward parchment, and it is edged by a brown outer band that ties the frame back to the field. Woven in Peshawar: The Chobi Tradition and Its Quality

Peshawar in northwest Pakistan is one of the few places still producing hand-knotted rugs of this standard at real volume, and the Chobi group is its best known output, named for the wood and plant based dyes that give these rugs their muted, already mellow tone.
