Measuring 12' x 15', it is hand-knotted in wool on a cotton foundation, with a lavender-slate gray field, a sage green center medallion and a wide green border, then finished with a soft antique wash that mutes the palette down to plaster and stone tones. Among oversize 12x15 area rugs this is the unusual one, because the field is not a quiet repeat: look closely and it is populated with deer, birds, small trees and flowering stems, the kind of storytelling normally reserved for much smaller, much finer pieces. Design and Motifs

Inside the sage medallion sits a stepped ivory and brown core with hooked arms, flanked left and right by two ivory pendant cartouches, and the green ground around it carries lavender blossom clusters, small yellow rosettes and curling leaf tips. Where this rug separates itself from the usual all over Oushak is the field. Above and below the medallion the weaver drew 4 tall column-like vessels in ivory, joined by flowering vine, and then filled the space between them with animal and bird life: standing and reclining deer, pairs of birds perched on branches, cranes in ivory outline, and low flowering shrubs. The border sequence runs 3 deep, a narrow gold hooked-stripe outer band, a beige guard stripe of 8 petal ivory rosettes and brown leaves, and the green main border, with the same rosette guard repeated on the inner edge against the field.

The Gray and Green Color Story

The field is a cool gray that leans lavender and slate depending on the light, with visible vertical abrash running through it that keeps the large open ground alive rather than flat. Set against it, the medallion and main border read sage to sea green, deepening almost to teal in the shaded photos and lifting toward soft celadon in the direct overhead shot. The drawing itself is done mostly in ivory, oatmeal and cool beige, with warm walnut brown outlines that give every deer, bird and rosette a crisp edge, and small hits of mustard gold in the border palmettes and the field flowers that act as the only real warm note in the rug. Lavender and periwinkle blossoms bridge the gray and the green so the two halves of the palette never argue.
