The ivory field carries a long oval medallion of roses, framed by garlands, scrollwork and a deep sage green border, and at this scale the whole composition can finally open up the way the original 18th century salon designs were meant to. Because it is flat woven it sits low and thin, which is a real advantage in rooms with doors that swing over the rug or under heavy dining furniture. It has never been used, and it ships with our certificate of authenticity. Design and Motifs

The layout follows the classic Aubusson salon formula. A large oval medallion holds a loose bouquet of open roses and pastel blossoms at dead center, ringed by a beaded band, a scrolling vine ribbon and finally a continuous garland of roses that traces the full oval. Four green shield shaped cartouches sit at the field corners with tied ribbon ornaments inside them, and small round rose roundels with grey blue ribbon bows mark the midpoint of each side. The spandrels are filled with acanthus scrollwork drawn in soft browns and tans on ivory, the kind of architectural ornament lifted straight from plaster ceilings and carved boiserie. The inner border is a sage green band with a repeating trellis, then a narrow pink and tan dentil stripe, and the wide outer border returns to ivory with an interlaced ribbon lattice enclosing single roses and buds. Each corner of that outer band resolves into a large shell and cornucopia motif with fruit and acanthus leaves, and the whole rug finishes in a plain deep green outer edge that frames the composition cleanly.

The Sage Green, Ivory and Blush Rose Palette

Color is what makes this piece easy to live with. The field is a warm ivory that shades toward soft butter cream in the center of the medallion, so the eye is drawn inward without a hard contrast. Against it the borders run a muted sage to olive green, deep enough to anchor 216 inches of length but never harsh, and the plain outer edge takes that green to its darkest reading. The floral work is painted in dusty rose and blush pink with a few deeper raspberry centers on the fully open roses, supported by sage and olive foliage, pale grey blue ribbons and the occasional lilac cluster in the corner fruit baskets. Structural ornament, the scrolls, shells and acanthus, is drawn in salmon, tan, camel and light brown, which is where the brown in the palette lives. There is no red and no strong blue anywhere in the rug, so it settles comfortably with painted millwork, gilt frames, cream upholstery and antique woods rather than fighting them.

Chinese Weaving in the Aubusson Tradition

Aubusson names a French town and a tapestry tradition, not a place of manufacture, and the finest handmade examples of that style today come out of Chinese workshops that specialize in flat woven tapestry carpets. This one is made in China, hand-woven in wool on a cotton foundation, and the quality shows in the shading: look at the shell corners and the rolled acanthus leaves, where four and five tones of tan are blended stitch by stitch to build a sense of relief on a surface that has no thickness at all. The joins between color areas are tight, the oval medallion holds its curve across nearly 18 feet, and the outer green band runs true from end to end, which is not trivial on a loom this wide.
