Design and Motifs

The center holds a small ivory panel framed in apricot and pearl dotting, filled with a ring of open roses, tulips, blue cornflowers and small 5 petal blossoms around a furled olive green rosette. Above, below and to each side of that panel sit rectangular cartouches packed with woven fruit, pears, grapes and quince rendered in pale monochrome so they read as carved stone, each capped by a small gilt scroll. From there the field opens into a stepped diamond framework outlined by dotted bands and pale piping, and 4 large rose garlands sweep diagonally across the corners with long trailing ribbons behind them. Smaller squares at the 4 corners of the inner frame each carry a single rosette. The wide outer border changes register completely, a meandering rose and leaf vine drawn in plum and cocoa brown on ivory, closed by a bold acanthus leaf band and a narrow plain brown edge.
