12'5" x 18' Oversize Tabriz Design Rug | Ivory & Black Silk & Wool | Made in China

At 12'5" x 18' this is a genuine palace piece, hand-knotted in wool with silk highlights and drawn in the classic Tabriz medallion style. The ivory ground carries a delicate all over vine, a black and camel medallion sits dead centre, and four black cartouches anchor the camel spandrels. Photographs 4 through 14 show how fine the outlining is, with single knot stems and clean petal edges holding their shape across nearly 224 square feet. It belongs in a great room, a banquet hall or an open plan space where smaller 12x18 rugs would still leave floor exposed. Every rug leaves our Freeport warehouse with a certificate of authenticity.

Design and Motifs

The layout follows the Tabriz workshop formula: a lobed central medallion, matching pendants above and below, quarter medallions in the 4 corners, and a field that never repeats a lazy motif. The medallion core is sage green with an 8 petal ivory rosette at its heart, ringed by camel palmettes and then by a black cloud band collar full of curling leaf tips. Across the ivory field, thin brown vines swing in wide arcs, each carrying small rosettes, buds and serrated leaves that face different directions so the eye keeps moving. The camel spandrels are drawn with scrolling arabesques rather than solid blocks, and each holds a black shield motif filled with a small bouquet. Three borders frame the whole: a broad black main band of alternating flowering stems, flanked by camel and sage guard stripes of paired rosettes and lancet leaves.

Ivory, Black and Camel Color Story

The field is a warm ivory, closer to soft cream than white, and the silk content gives it a low sheen that shifts as you walk around the room. Against that, the main border and the medallion collar read as a true deep black, which is what gives this rug its graphic punch from across a large space. Between those two extremes sits a wide band of camel and soft sand in the spandrels and guard stripes, cooling into a pale sage green in the inner guards and the medallion core. The florals supply the accents: dusty rose, salmon, brick red centres, powder blue pin dots and olive to moss green leaves. Close up, as in the macro shots, you can see 3 and 4 tones used inside a single blossom, which is what keeps an ivory and black rug from looking flat.

Origin and Weaving Quality

This rug was hand-knotted in China on a cotton foundation, in a workshop weaving to the Tabriz drawing tradition rather than a regional folk pattern. The back photos show tight, even knotting with the design fully legible from the reverse, which is the honest test of a curvilinear piece this large: soft arcs and fine vine work only survive at a high knot count. The pile is wool with silk used for the highlight lines and the rosette centres, so the flowers lift slightly off the ground both in texture and in light.
