14'2" x 20' Jaipur Oriental Rug | Olive Green All-Over Floral | Palace Size, Excellent Condition
This is a true palace piece: 14'2" x 20' of hand-knotted wool woven in Jaipur, with a quiet olive green field carried edge to edge by a flowering vine and framed by a deep burgundy border. Rugs of this footprint are made to order in very small numbers, which is why the pool of genuine oversize 14x20 hand-knotted rugs stays so thin. The pile is full and evenly clipped, the selvedges are tight, the original woven tag is still attached to the back, and the rug is in excellent condition throughout. Every rug we ship carries a certificate of authenticity confirming that it is hand-knotted, along with its origin, materials and measurements.
Design and Motifs
The field is a classic all-over floral composition with no medallion, so the pattern reads evenly no matter where furniture lands. Broad lotus palmettes alternate with fan-shaped blossoms and small 8 petal rosettes, linked by a thin ivory vine that loops back on itself in a repeating lattice. Scattered between them are serrated leaves, tiny cypress-like sprigs and diamond buds that keep the repeat from feeling mechanical. The main burgundy border runs a stately procession of ivory palmettes and star rosettes on a curling stem, flanked by a narrow beige guard stripe of paired hooks and, on the outer edge, an olive band with a running zigzag vine. All 4 corners are resolved cleanly, which on a rug this wide is a real test of the cartoon and the weaver's discipline.
The Olive Green and Burgundy Palette
The ground is a soft olive, closer to moss and sage than to a bright emerald, and it shifts with the light: warmer and more yellow-green under lamps, cooler and greyer in daylight. Against it, the drawing is worked in beige, cream and pale gold, with the larger palmettes shaded in dusty rose, mauve and antique ivory so the blossoms lift off the field without shouting. The border is a deep burgundy, a wine red with a plum undertone rather than a fire red, and it pulls the whole composition together and sets off the ivory florals. Small accents of soft brown, taupe and pale green appear inside the leaves and rosettes. The result sits comfortably with walnut and mahogany furniture, brass, leather and warm neutral walls, and it is one of the more usable green area rugs at this scale.
Jaipur Weaving and Quality
Jaipur, in Rajasthan, is one of the great weaving centers of northern India and the workshops there produce much of the world's best contemporary hand-knotted work, drawing on the Mughal court tradition that also shaped the older Agra and Amritsar rugs. This piece is knotted on a cotton foundation with a wool pile, and the back shows a straight, consistent knot line across the full 170" width, which is how an Oriental rug of this size stays flat and square on the floor. The wool has a soft handle and a clear sheen in the close-up photographs, the colors are drawn with restraint, and the fringes and selvedges are original and intact. A rug 14'2" x 20' takes a team of weavers many months on a single loom, and it is built to hold a great room, a formal dining room or a library for decades.
