14' x 24' Heriz Design Oriental Rug | Plum, Black & Olive Green | Hand-Knotted Wool, Never Used

This is a true palace piece: 14' x 24' of hand-knotted wool, 336 square feet of floor covered by a single rug with no seams and no panels. The field is a deep plum, the medallion and the wide main border are near black, and the corner spandrels carry camel gold and olive green. It has never been used, the 3/8" wool pile still stands full and even across the whole length, and the cotton fringe is untouched. Rugs at this scale are rarely woven on speculation, which is why the oversize market is thin, and pieces this wide usually carry a freight surcharge elsewhere. Here it ships free to all 50 states, and a certificate of authenticity is issued with every rug we sell. Browse the rest of our oversized rugs if you are working to a room this large.

Design and Motifs

The drawing follows the classic Heriz formula: a large stepped medallion anchoring the center, twin pendants running out along the long axis, and 4 heavy corner spandrels that box the field into a single balanced composition. Inside the medallion, as the close-up shows, a small olive rosette sits at the exact center, ringed by ivory and cream leaf forms, maroon split palmettes and gold cartouches drawn with the straight lines and angled turns typical of geometric medallion rugs. The plum field around it is filled with angular vine work, serrated leaves, rosettes and small birds rather than left open, so the eye keeps finding detail as it moves down the 24' length. The main border runs a black ground with alternating turtle palmettes and rosettes in gold, olive and ivory, flanked by a plum guard stripe and an ivory vine stripe on each side. Scale is handled properly here: the border widens to hold its own against the field, and the medallion is drawn large enough that the rug reads as one design from across a room rather than as a small pattern stretched out.

Plum, Black and Olive Green Color Story

The field color is plum, a muted purple-red with a brown undertone that sits between burgundy and eggplant and shifts warmer or cooler depending on how the light falls, visible in the difference between the flat studio shot and the showroom floor shots. Against it, the medallion and the main border are a soft black that reads charcoal in daylight and gives the rug its weight and definition. The third color is olive green, used in the leaf forms, the spandrel grounds and the border rosettes, and it is a dusty sage rather than a bright green. Camel gold does most of the connecting work, filling the large corner spandrels and the cartouches inside the medallion, with ivory and cream picking out the outlines, the small flowerheads in the guard stripes and the fringe. Small accents of rust, apricot and pale grey appear in the flowers. It is a dark, dignified palette rather than a bright one, and it works with walnut and mahogany furniture, oak and walnut floors, cream or greige walls, and brass or bronze lighting. Nothing in the coloring is loud, which matters on a rug that will occupy an entire room.

Made in India: Weaving and Quality

This rug was hand-knotted in India, and that is a recommendation, not a caveat. India is where most of the world's good contemporary hand-knotted work is now made, and the northern Indian weaving centers are among the very few places still set up to put a 24' loom to work for the length of time a rug this size demands. The back shot with the ruler tells you what you are buying: even rows, tight straight cotton warps, a firm handle and a 3/8" pile clipped level across the whole surface, with no loose selvage and no puckering, which is the real test on a rug 14' wide. Heriz is a design language from the villages east of Tabriz, and the weavers here have kept its angular drawing and heavy border proportions intact while working to modern workshop standards of consistency. If you are weighing the labels, our guide on Persian rugs vs Oriental rugs explains what separates the two. As a new, never used piece, this one has its full service life ahead of it.
