This is a palace scale floor piece in the fullest sense: 16'7" x 21'5" of hand-knotted wool drawn in the Oushak manner, with a softly bleached beige ground that carries the pattern instead of fighting it. The wool has the generous, slightly loose handle that suits weaving at this width, and the drawing stays relaxed and gently angular from end to end, which is exactly what separates an Oushak layout from the tighter, more clinical city floral schools. Pieces at 21 feet long are uncommon in any condition, and this one is sound and even across all 4 corners and both ends. Design and Motifs

The field is an all over design built from two alternating shapes. Tall serrated medallions outlined in cornflower blue run in vertical pairs, each one holding a small stepped diamond with a rust outline and a blue dot at its heart. Between and around them sit broad taupe brown palmettes, split open and filled with salmon scrollwork, blue leaf tips and ivory hooks. Small 8 petal rosettes, 8 point stars and short curling vine tendrils fill the ground between the larger forms, so the eye never lands on an empty stretch. The border system is generous: a wide sage green main band carrying alternating rosettes and leafy cartouches, flanked by sand colored guard stripes scattered with tiny floral sprigs and directional serrated triangles, and separated by narrow rust outlines that hold the whole frame together. The corners are resolved honestly in the village manner, with the border pattern turning rather than repeating in a perfect mirror.

A Beige Ground Worked in Blue, Sage and Rust

Beige is the anchor, but it is not a single flat tone. The ground moves between oatmeal, sand and pale ivory, with soft horizontal shifts of abrash that only wool dyed in small batches produces. Against it the blues do the drawing: a clear cornflower for the medallion outlines, a dustier slate blue inside the border, and small deep indigo accents in rosette centers and border flowerheads. The palmettes read as warm taupe brown drifting toward mushroom, with cooler grey brown passages where the light catches the pile at an angle. Rust and terracotta appear as fine outlines, star points and diamond frames, warming the whole scheme without ever becoming loud, and a chalky salmon pink softens the flower heads. The main border sits in a muted sage green, close to celadon, which is the one cool note that lifts the beige rather than dulling it. The overall effect is quiet and highly decorative, the kind of palette that works with limestone, pale oak, linen and walnut in equal measure.

Oushak Design, Woven in Persia

The Oushak vocabulary of large scale palmettes, open ground and softly serrated medallions has been borrowed and reinterpreted by Persian weavers for generations, and this rug is a Persian reading of it, hand-knotted on a cotton foundation with a wool pile. A loom wide enough for 16'7" has to be built and dressed for a single commission, and the weaving then runs for years in one place, which is why the tension stays even and the side finishes and ends remain straight over such a distance. The reverse, visible in the photographs, shows a regular and clearly legible knot with the pattern reading almost as crisply from the back as from the face, and a medium pile height that suits a rug intended to be walked on rather than admired from a wall. Knot density here is moderate by design: the drawing is bold, the motifs are large, and the weave is chosen for longevity under real traffic in a great room, a long dining space or an open plan floor where 21 feet of length is finally usable.
