A runner of 2'5" x 28'7" is not a size anyone weaves by accident. This Persian Hosseinabad was put on the loom for a hall that keeps going: 343 inches of continuous madder red field, only 29 inches wide, with the Herati repeat holding its rhythm from the first row of knots to the last. It is hand-knotted in wool on a cotton foundation, woven in the 2000s, and arrives in perfect condition with full pile and clean, original ends and sides. Pieces this long sit at the far end of what is available in extra long Persian runners, since most looms are simply never dressed to that length. Design and Motifs

The field carries the Herati, the pattern village weavers also call mahi, or fish. A diamond lattice runs the full length of the rug, each lozenge outlined in dark indigo and centered on a small rosette, with four curled lanceolate leaves turning around it like fish circling a pool. Between the diamonds sit tiny star rosettes and hooked leaf tips that fill the red ground without crowding it. Because this is an all over design with no medallion, the runner can be cut into visually by furniture, a doorway or a stair landing and still read as complete. The main border is an ivory turtle palmette meander with alternating floral heads, flanked on both sides by narrow reciprocal guard stripes in dark blue and cream. Count the repeats down the length and the drawing stays remarkably consistent, which is the real test of a runner this long.

Madder Red, Indigo and Olive

The ground is a deep madder red that leans slightly cool, closer to brick and garnet than to orange, and it shifts very gently along the length in the soft banding that hand-dyed wool always shows. Against it, the lattice and the leaf outlines are drawn in a near-black indigo that reads navy in daylight and almost charcoal under lamps. Olive green appears in the curled fish leaves and in parts of the border vine, giving the pattern its warmth and keeping the red from going flat. The main border is a creamy ivory, the single lightest note in the rug, and it frames the field cleanly down all 28'7". Look closely and there are small accents of rust, soft gold and a muted teal in the rosette centers. The overall effect is a dark, saturated, classic Persian palette that hides traffic well in a corridor and sits comfortably with wood floors, painted wainscot and antique furniture.

Hosseinabad and the Weaving of the Hamedan Region

Hosseinabad is a weaving village in western Persia whose output is sold within the wider Hamedan group, a district of hundreds of villages known for durable, honestly made wool rugs rather than for city-workshop fineness. The wool from this high plateau is springy and high in lanolin, which is exactly what you want underfoot in a hallway that gets walked every day. Weavers here work from memory on the Herati rather than from a full cartoon, which is why the repeat carries small, human variations rather than the machine-perfect symmetry of a studio piece. The weave is firm, the pile is clipped at a medium height, and the sides and ends are finished the traditional village way. For a buyer who wants one continuous rug for a long corridor instead of two runners butted together, a piece of this length in perfect condition is a genuinely uncommon find.
