2'8" x 20' Oriental Runner Rug | Ziegler All Over Floral | Green & Ivory | Hand-Knotted Wool | Made in India

Twenty feet is a length almost nobody stocks, and it is exactly the length a long corridor or a double stair hall needs. This 2'8" x 20' runner is hand-knotted in wool on a cotton foundation, 32 inches wide and 240 inches long, with a soft sage green field carrying an unbroken floral lattice from one end to the other and a wide ivory border that frames it without shouting. It is brand new and never walked on, the pile still full and even, the selvedges tight and the fringe clean and white. As a hand-knotted Oriental rug, it ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming the weave, the wool pile and the country of origin. If you are shopping specifically for long hallway runners, this is the piece that covers a run most rugs simply cannot reach.

Design and Motifs

The drawing is a classic Ziegler scheme: a repeating diamond lattice built from leafy vines, with large ivory palmettes and open 8 petal rosettes set at the crossings and smaller serrated leaves filling the ground between them. There is no central medallion, which is what makes it work over 20 feet, because an all over floral design reads the same whether you see 3 feet of it from a doorway or the whole run from the far end. Small coral red flower heads punctuate the field at regular intervals, roughly one every 2 feet, and give the eye something to follow. The ivory main border runs a delicate meandering vine with single blossoms and tiny leaf sprigs, flanked by narrow guard stripes, and the end panels repeat the same blossom rhythm so both ends finish properly rather than being cut short.

Sage Green and Ivory Color Palette

The field is a muted sage to olive green, closer to dried bay leaf than to emerald, and it shifts gently along the length as the light moves, which is normal in handspun wool and is part of what keeps a long runner from looking printed. Against it the lattice and palmettes are drawn in ivory and warm cream, with a few forms softened to pale wheat and oatmeal. The accent colors are used sparingly and well: a clear coral red in the rosette centers, and a dusty pale blue in the leaves and some of the border blossoms, cool enough to lift the green without introducing a second theme. The border reads as light ivory with a faint honey cast, and the outer edge is finished in the same green as the field, so the rug has a clean dark line all the way around. Overall the palette is quiet and neutral leaning, easy to live with next to oak, walnut, limestone or painted paneling.

Woven in India in the Ziegler Tradition

India is where most of the world's good contemporary hand-knotted work is now made, and this runner shows why. The Ziegler design takes its name from the 19th century European trading house that first commissioned these softly colored, large scale floral patterns for Western interiors, and the better Indian workshops weave it today with handspun wool, level loom tension and a hand-clipped pile depth that keeps the drawing crisp. Weaving a 20 foot runner is a discipline problem more than a speed problem: the width has to hold at 32 inches from the first knot to the last, the lattice has to stay in register over 240 inches, and the two ends have to match. This one holds straight, lies flat and keeps its repeat honest from fringe to fringe, with durable wool pile on a cotton foundation built for exactly the kind of daily traffic a hallway gives it.
