12' x 14'5" Green Ziegler Rug | All Over Floral Vine | Natural Wool Hand-Knotted in India

This is a big, quiet room rug: 173 inches long, hand-knotted one knot at a time in natural wool on a cotton foundation, with a deep green field carrying a full all over floral vine and a wide wheat beige border that softens the whole piece. The weave is finer than most work at this scale, which is why the drawing stays crisp across 12 feet of width instead of going blocky, and the pile has the dry, slightly matte handle of good undyed and naturally dyed wool rather than the shine of a machine product. It is brand new and never used, and like every piece we import it ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming it as a genuine hand-knotted Oriental rug, not a tufted or power-loomed imitation.

Design and Motifs

The field is a classic all over design with no central medallion: a continuous lattice of curving vines that throws off large cream palmettes, serrated split leaf forms, open lotus blossoms and small round rosettes, with the pattern mirrored on the long axis so the drawing reads the same from either end of the room. The Ziegler idiom shows in the scale and the spacing, with motifs drawn oversized and set loosely enough that the ground colour stays visible between them. A narrow floral inner guard separates the field from a very wide main border, where detached sprays, 3 lobed clover devices and leafy palmettes float on an open beige ground instead of running in a tight repeat. Two slim minor borders of angled leaf and vine work bracket the main band, and the rug finishes in a solid dark green outer stripe with plain ivory fringe at both ends.

A Deep Green Field Framed in Wheat and Beige

The ground is a deep pine green that moves toward sage and slate as the light crosses it, with gentle abrash banding through the field that comes from small dye lots rather than uniform chemical colour. Against it the vinework sits in wheat, cream and pale gold, with the larger palmettes shading from ivory at the centre out to a warm tan edge. Scattered through the field are small accents that keep the palette from going flat: dusty rose and mauve rosette centres, faded brown roundels ringed in soft blue, and thin flecks of teal along the leaf outlines. The border is a pale wheat beige, almost bone in places, drawn with brown, rose and soft blue-green motifs, and the whole rug is closed by that dark green outer band. It is a muted, low-contrast reading of green rugs that works with warm woods, brass and natural linen.

Woven in India in the Ziegler Tradition

India is where most of the world's best contemporary hand-knotted weaving is now done, and this rug is a good argument for it: hand-spun wool, a tight cotton foundation, and a knot count high enough to hold curved vine drawing across a 12 foot width without the pattern drifting. The Ziegler style it follows comes out of the 19th century export workshops, where designers opened up the classical floral repertoire and lightened the palette for large Western rooms, and that is exactly what this piece does at 173 inches long. The back shows even, well-packed knotting with clean selvedges and no distortion at the corners, and the pile is cut at a medium height that will wear evenly under furniture.
